Dodge Charger Sales Ads: Help Confirm My Suspicion...Sounds too good to be true?

So I found a Dodge Charger on eBay and contacted the seller through the site. No response... 

They have an email listed in the ad - sent a note to that address, as well. No response... 

Tried from another email address again. And again, no response... 

Asked my wife to email the seller, as I will be in the town the car is listed, in the coming week - I can look at the car in person... NO RESPONSE... 

In between emails, we have given 6-10 hours for a response. No elaborate requests, just a few questions - not asking for any more images/pictures, just some more info about the car... 

So, my question, is this a scam of a car? I am leaning towards "yes"

Also, I am suspicious when I see, "contact me through this email" vs. the eBay messaging system 


I'm thinking someone may have grabbed some pics from another sale (or simply online) and created an ad - if they get the deposit $$$$, they still made out, true?

I would think if it's a scammer he'd be more likely to get right back to you. In this case I'd say he's just a scatter-brained jackass, which is almost as bad. Either way I'd be very cautious.

I can't count the number of e-bay messages I've sent that went unanswered only to find the item sold later and the seller with 100% feedback rating.

Some sellers just aren't into communication other than acknowledging a sale and collecting the money.

I got scammed on ebay on a Charger earlier this year.  Same type of deal, wanted to email to an outside address and wanted a deposit via wire to an "ebay protected" account. In the photos I noticed there was a dealer frame around the plate as it was listed for sale by dealer. I called them and they confirmed my suspision that the car had sold on thier lot months earlier and they were not selling the car. It turned out to be a huge scam after I confronted the seller they disapeared into thin air........ 2 months later same car, same ad, same seller, same scam, I emailed ebay and the ad was removed 2 hours later. Sorry to go on but personally no contact, no deal. Hope you find a car though!

Using a fourth (4th) email, asking naive sounding questions, I finally got a response...  


After a few exchanges, here is what they came back with @ 4:45 AM:

Let me explain you how the deal works. You will send the money as a deposit to an ebay representative so you will not make an payment, once the payment is confirmed you can come and inspect the car, or I will shipp it to you. If the car is not as described or there is something wrong with the car I will pay the shipping back and you will have a full refund from ebay. If everything is ok ebay will get the approval from you to release me the funds.
If you agree with this process please let me know so I can start the process. I think is a safe way for you and for me, thank you

Any car on the internet that I was interested in over the last ten years or so that wasn't available for an "in-person" inspection, I classified as a scam. Yes, I may have passed over some legit cars, but money is too hard to come by to simply email it away.

One if the bigger scam giveaways.  When I see that I always email the seller account and ask to see if its his car.  I've also seen and had it happen where there is a link embedded in the pic or somewhere you would normally click and it goes to a fake site asking you to relog in again.  Called up the Ebay and sure enough a scam.

That is almost identical to the email that I got when I was the one getting scammed. Only difference was instead of ebay "Representative" it was an ebay "protected account". Ebay does not handle money in any transaction, ever. Also 99% of the time they will be in foreign country's and the English will be suspect. Such as in your email, making (an payment) vs. (a payment), or (shipp vs. ship).....Although not conclusive (sum peopel jist kant spel)it raises a red flag for me. The big give away for me though is the Ebay handling money part, they just don't do it.

i had one of those fake regular emails saying i had to pot a $300+ bond to get taken off a homeland security "no fly " list, i had the guy going for over a 2 weeks saying i sent it then something was wrong with the western union, then my wife made an "insufficient funds" at the bank.  i forwarded all the emails to the local fbi office and they finally called me after 2 weeks to tell me i have to file with some other government org that had an online complaint form but no way to attach all the emails that i had.   they could of got the guy when he wnet to the W.U. to pick up the money 3 times but they just blew it..  oh yeah, the kicker was that he was a pastor and he worked for the fbi himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just had another ad like this one on eBay - was within 20 minutes of the town listed - once I asked for the tel. number and address where the car could be seen - nothing... Are people really that stupid to buy (or put a deposit down on) a car they have never seen?

the latest scams are on the new smart phones, you get a text message that says your bank has an updated version for you and when you download it from the message INSTEAD of from the banks web site, it installs software to get your accounts and info for identity theft.  seems smart people with smart gadgets aren't really that smart

Selling one of my cars, I got an email from a lady who was ready to send the money to my Paypal Acct.

I explained, I do not have one - come see the car, and bring cash (or certified funds). She insisted on paypal.

I told her the car was not for her then... She asked again if I would send my paypal info to her... What gives?

Or maybe she knows she can jerk her funds right back out and still leave him holding the bag.  Paypal doesn't ask you first before they do a charge back.  They just reverse the funds until you can prove that the other person got whatever the case may be then it takes awhile  .  Been there already from ebay sales.  If somebody has a hacked paypal acct  loaded with funds then possibly somebody could make a payment from it too

A couple of years ago i saw an ebay ad with a 70 Hemi challenger R/T 4 speed in beautifull condition.
The car was located in Portugal and if i remember right the price was $9000.00 usd.
I did get the same respond like you.
First i've had to wire money and he would take care of the shipping.
I told him to give me the adress and i go hop in a plane the same day,pay him cash and drive the car back home to the netherlands.
And you guessed it: I never did get an answer back from him.
Offcourse i new instantly it was a scam.

I never accept large payments through PayPal

Very common that payment get made then the person says thier account was stolen and the money get refunded and you are out your item.

If they are insisting then they are using a stolen paypal account.

You are doing the right thing by making them come in person and bring cash.

If you are going to accept a check or certified anything then wait for it to clear before allowing the car out of your sight.
The only way I accept a check that has not cleared is if thier bank is the one that handed it to me.
