Was retired, but that didn't last long. Now working as a consultant which is great. I figure life will be retirement then call up, then retirement, then call up, until I buried. Must not be very many young folks going into finish chemistry. :shruggy:

My neighbor did things right. He was a teacher for the kids with learning disabilities. He retired from that and took a full pension. He took at part time job doing the same thing in a school district about 10 miles from ours. Because he took the part time teaching job in a differant district he was able to keep his pension from the first district and collect pay and benifets from the second district. :2thumbs:

I was the biggest kid on my block untill Dick retired.   Now he has 2 new snowmobiles, a new dodge truck, a 2000 Trans Am, a new car for his wife, 4 new ATV's, He built a new cottage on his hunting property.

On a side note, you could never have a better guy for a neighbor. He'll do anything for me and I him. Hell he saw me setting up to put a new roof on my garage a two weeks ago and he grabed his tools and climbed up un the roof with me saying "looks like you could use a hand!"

I guess I'm ok with not being the bigest kid on the block anymore. :scratchchin:
I may be schizophrenic but at least I have us!

I have worked in construction for 30 years never knowing if I would have work through each winter. Some times not but 9 months ago I went to work for a hospital I guess it would be a sense of security now for the first time ever.

I worked as a plumber on new commercial projects on sports stadiums, hospitals, casinos, hotels and such. This is the first service work I have ever done. Now it is fixing things others tear up. Not as gratifying but steady and better on my 48 year old body.

Keeping your partner in line is a labour of love  :slap: and even though it's a very demanding job, you don't get paid for it.
I've been doing it for 37 years and I've yet to see a cent!  :smilielol:

nobody told me your supposed to love your job :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall: :brickwall:

after putting in 12 years of my soul into every minute of every day of every week (i'm not a supervisor but i answer phones calls at all hours for work stuff, i cover my supervisor multiple times a day with stuff he was doing 2 years BEFORE i showed up) i was told today that as soon as my shoulder is up to snuff i'm getting back in a truck to be a driver again, no warning, no answers, this is one place i thought that cared about sacrifice, but thats out the freaking window now.

i've always thought that unions and government people just milked their jobs but now i see thats the way the companies want it, they just don't give a f**k about someone who cares about their job or the company.  from now on i only do what i have to do and don't volunteer for jack s**t, to help save money OR prevent a loss, come in on time and walk out the damn door when the time is over

sorry but this thread was just too coincidental for todays news
hope everyone that thinks they "love " their job like i thought i did has a better back up plan than i do right now :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode: :RantExplode:

i own a very small hardwood flooring company. been doing this for 16 years now. been in const. all my life. love it and like working for myself. long hours and never ending weeks. but still like going to work. i also have played in bands since the early 80s and still play. music and cars keep me sain. i like seeing what we have done when the job is done. take alot of pride in my work. but hated working for companys. hate being treated like a number.

I like knowing that signs I've conceptualized, designed and built are there for thousands of people to see everyday. I like that stuff I make is out there and will be for a long time. Stuff I've made has been installed at universities, arenas, banks and businesses large and small. I guess I like the (relative) permanence of the work I do. Plus I have a great boss and work for an established small business and good benefits. I also like that I've been able to keep learning - in the last year I've also added digital message sign programming and installation to my skill set. I've been there for 13 years and I don't see myself going anywhere anytime soon.

As a carpenter, I get to build things. I like that. I also like to use power tools. The drills, impact wrenches, power planer, nail guns and palm nailers...... what fun!

dkn1997

I get to fix things nobody else can.  I'm a field manager and my primary job is to quality check the work that our  10 crews do.

The absolute best part of the job is that when 1 or 2 guys goes to a svc call and can't figure it out, I go and solve the problem.  Best feeling watching [Insert whatever mechanical device you want] fire up when the other guys left it for dead.  As their boss, the techs kid themselves into believing that I've "forgotten what it's like" ..so I enjoy the chance to go out and show who's still got the biggest dick in the room.

"This automatically generated email is to sincerely thank you on the date of you anniversary of employment with the company."

22 years now.  I had to call my departments HR rep at 20 and remind them that they owed me my 20 year bonus (one time, one extra week off).  Her response?  "That's not my job, you need to call Jody"...Jody's response "That's not my job either"...feel the love.    :flush:

On the plus side, I did my part to bring Xopenex and Brovana to market.  One is for asthma and the other for COPD.  So a few people are breathing easier out there.

I love the fact I get to put very important Medivac Helicopters back into the air after they return from a rescue full of bullet holes and all sorts of other damages. Makes working in Afghanistan worth it. Knowing the Helicopter I repair will be able to save more lives out here.  :2thumbs:

State of Alabama - IT 'desktop' support, best part would easily be the full medical and dental coverage. Followed closely by enjoying what I do along with occasional in-state travel.

I work for the electrical utility that looks after the south west corner of Australia. Lots of territory to cover. Wouldn't mind hearing from other guys in the industry as well. Lucky I love driving and the scenery.
