Good Phones , I know I have 3-4 of them still

Old Moparz

I remember my Mom getting a cell phone waaaaaaaaay back that looked as though you were carrying a Sear's Diehard car battery with a phone plugged in to it.

I'm looking to get a new cell phone since I am tired of looking at a screen that is filled with all these tiny dirt particles or whatever they are. I also keep losing the SMS service, whatever that is.   :shruggy:

Might swipe my daughter's phone & get her a new one.

Worked with a guy back in the early 90s that was still using a briefcase based cell. Couldn't convince him to just get one of those.  :hah:

They were great for the time. I remember being amazed at just a regular home cordless phone when they first came out!

Remember those real cheap phones that hung up when you put them down on a table? Funny story...I was at my buddy's house one day back in the '80s and he was arguing with his girlfriend on one of those phones. When he hung up, he proceeded to complain about her saying some pretty bad things about her ... "that stupid f*****g b**ch drives me f*****g nuts", etc. etc. (something to that nature). When things went quiet, suddenly we heard this real faint, distant voice screaming..."I heard every word you said you son-of-a-b**ch!" Yep! He set it down on the sofa and it never completely hung up! You should have seen the look on his face when it hit him what happened!! He picked up the phone and sheepishly said, "uh, hhhello?" She was on the other end tearing him a new a$$hole boy!! That was freaking hilarious!!     :smilielol:

We still laugh about that to this day...oh, and he married her in the end...then divorced her...

I had an old 84 Thunderbird with a car phone in it. You had to swipe your credit card before using it   I never used it but it was a cool talking piece.

I heard something ineresting in the airport this summer.  The old "bag phones" are the "poor man's"  satalite phone among the fishing charters in Florida.  The 5 watts will reach out to towers the modern 1/3 watt phones won't touch.  I assume the 911 functionality doesn't care about the GPS compatibilty now required to activate a phone.

Tilar

You couldn't beat those old bag phones for reception, but now it seems like they have a tower every mile or so apart.

Man those old motorola phones could sure take a beating though and would keep on working.  Hell, I occasionally chucked mine a few times after an arguement on it and it still worked.  I do that today and the thing is in about 10 pieces with the battery popping out and cover coming off the back.    :rotz:  They don't make shit like they used to!  Our cars are a perfect example!

They were popular if you lived in the deep woods for the same reason. Before the GPS was made mandatory around 05, people in the boonies were scrounging for bag phones so they could use their cell at home. I bought my first bag phone in the middle 80's. It was $60 a month, I got 20 minutes included and each additional minute was $1 or so. The nearest tower was easily a 30 minute drive away.
