Russian jet crash kills 43, many top hockey stars
APBy LYNN BERRY - Associated Press | AP – 14 mins ago

TUNOSHNA, Russia (AP) — A Russian jet carrying a top ice hockey team crashed just after takeoff Wednesday, killing at least 43 people and leaving two others critically injured, officials said. It was one of the worst plane crashes ever involving a sports team.

The Russian Emergency Situations Ministry said the Yak-42 plane crashed into a riverbank on the Volga River immediately after leaving an airport near the western city of Yaroslavl, 150 miles (240 kilometers) northeast of Moscow. It was sunny at the time.

The plane was carrying the Lokomotiv ice hockey team from Yaroslavl to Minsk, the capital of Belarus, where the team was to play Thursday against Dinamo Minsk in the opening game of the season for the Kontinental Hockey League. The ministry said the plane had 45 people on board, including 37 passengers and eight crew.

You know, I come from a time that I remember the Cuban missile crisis, When JFK was killed, When Martin Luther King delivered his "I have a dream" speech and everyone wanting him dead only to see it happen not so long afterwards, when Russia and the US were in a cold war and both were afraid the other was going to be the first to "push the button", I remember the hell of Vietnam where our boys went to die and Hanoy Jane Fonda... No words can portray the extreme aversion I feel for that bitch, and I remember the first black family to actually buy a house and move into this small town where I was raised up only to be run off fearful for their lives just a few short weeks later.

Spending time on the internet and talking with people from all over the world has brought me to the conclusion that all of us (with the exception of some current politicians) want the same thing. Peace and a good life.

You're right Ponch, That is sad.  God be with the families of the people that died here.

It often seems like these planes go down right after takeoff. Probably naive but every time I fly I figure once we're at 10,000 ft+ we're home free.

At least these poor bastards didn't crash in the Andes and have to resort to eating each other. :eek2:

weird how we think that way. I think Im home free when the plane is descending and on approach. I try not to think about how some of the worst crashes have occurred precisely during that stage. I remember being totally freaked out by the Cerritos Crash , even though I was just a little kid when it happened, but I remember seeing the news and my family talking about it because we always flew that airline.

Read the book, Alive, by Piers Paul Read. Amazing stuff. Then watch the movie...not as profound, but nice special FX.

Not sure what it is but the older I get the less I enjoy flying. Still, if you want to get there fast and enjoy more of your time off at the destination it's more practical to cover the ground in 2 hours instead of 12.

We have a friend from Indiana who comes to visit every few years and she always takes Amtrak. Invariably something happens that causes a delay. Once it was a land slide on the tracks and another time it was too much snow. Somehow she always ends up getting put on a Greyhound bus. :rotz: She never says but I think she's afraid to fly and although I can't fault her for it I just wouldn't be able to stand the SLOOOOW service. I took a bus across Oregon once to get a car and I thought I was going to go apeshit. It took 10 hours to cover 5.5 hrs. of space because it never got over 50 mph and they stopped at EVERY friggin' wide spot in the road. :pullinghair:
