I was just wondering... for laughs... if there was anything special about a 69 Daytona that ends in 355139...?  I know it was sold in Madison, WI.  I was told it was a very early build date car?

Anyone know?

No reason............

Yeah, I saw the list.  So still a fairly early build date.

Yes, I apologize. I didn't mean to be rude.  Thank you for the information.  I only had that it was it sold in Madison.  Not that it was the 51st car produced.

What's with the popcorn... it is almost like you are expecting something?!

i would of thought an aug 69 ship date would be at the end of production, didn't they start them out in sept 68 to be a 69 model year??

The idea of a Daytona did not exist in Sept of 1968.    Daytonas are 1969 1/2 models.   Ford put up a stink about the Daytona and lobbied NASCAR and ACCUS to have it considered to be a 1970 model.  In other words, "build more of them" to make it legal.   Didn't happen.

mauve66

so as a 69 1/2 model the first ones would of shipped in feb 69 then right??  if they started shipping them in july-aug 69 then why wouldn't they be called 70 models??

I only had that it was it sold in Madison.  Not that it was the 51st car produced.

The first 111 Daytonas (excluding 287970) had a Scheduled Production Date of 4/27/69, which includes Daytona VIN's 355101 through 358403.  If my spreadsheet's formula serves me correctly, that's 111 Daytonas with the same SPD.  Of course, that doesn't mean all 111 were actually made on 4/27, as I think that particular SPD may fall under the same category that the A12 batch of 4/26 SPD's did... they could have been made at about any time around then.  Mid-May date codes on individual components from 4/27 SPD Daytonas I've looked at would indicate that was true for Daytonas as well.

There are also two different dates to keep in mind... the Hamtramck Assembly Plant's SPD, and Creative Industries' "ship date".  The two are not correlated at all, and it's a $200 cab ride from certainty that the Ship Date has much to do with the order the cars were converted by Creative.  We just don't know for sure in what order they converted the cars, and roughly 77% of the cars were shipped between 8/16 and 8/30 anyway... that's a span of only two weeks.  It makes marginal difference where a car was in that particular numerical sequence, and I think it sometimes had as much to do with them batching cars together on the trucks headed towards a specific geographical destination more than anything.  In other words, the mid-run shipping order doesn't really matter much IMHO.  There are some distinctions about later cars, but that's another story for another day.

Excluding maxwellwedge's oddball car with a 6/27 ship date, the first car went out from creative 8/16, and the last one shipped 9/8 - which allowed them just enough time to submit the Ship List to NASCAR for confirmation prior to the 1969 Talladega race's practice sessions.

It's my firm belief Chrysler was at least a little concerned with late-shipped Daytonas potentially falling under the 1970 vehicle regulations, as expressed in some of their earlier planned deadlines and other actions taken when those deadlines weren't met.  Ultimately, I think they were more worried about the Feds than they were Bill France - although having to make and sell 4x as many Daytonas as they did under the 1969 homologation rules would have been tough for sure.  Had the late-shipped cars been subjected to 1970 Federal Safety Standards, lots of engineering recertifications and changes to meet new regulations (e.g. lighted markers rather than merely reflectors just to name one) would have ensued.  It would have been a disaster.  As it was, I suspect Chrysler slid the last 115 +/- cars out to the dealerships quietly and crossed their fingers they wouldn't get busted by either group.

Sept 14 1969 was the due date for the daytonas to already built and delivered to dealers in order to qualify for the annugrual race. From what I ve read .
On another note the 355139 daytona 4 27  build date its VON #926076

And then there was a claim by a dealer 355101 was a 1st or 2nd car  :shruggy:

That and for the simple fact that the car is a factory B5 blue, with blue interior car would put a hinderance on me buying it. I still wish I could have picked this car up about 2 years ago for $70K at the time. It used to be my dad's old car.

355101 would be the last 6 digits of the VIN. Lowest VIN of the batch of cars, (technically speaking it is the 2nd lowest VIN on a Daytona that was produced). The car was at one time shipped over to Germany (very early in its life) returned to the USA in 1979. Purchased by my dad in 1980. Later sold by my dad in 1985-6.
