Problems with a gateway laptop

Ok, this story starts a few days ago when, after going a few months without renewing my anti virus software, my laptop gets a virus. So I wipe it out, and then find out and everything is fine. But then 2 days later it will no longer work on normal mode, and will only access the internet when in safe mode, and that if the screen is closed and then re opened it will not turn back on no matter what is done, and i must restart the computer. I have also found that, even before all of this, that the volume controls, and scroll function on the little touchpad will randomly stop working. I have since read that many people despise gateways, and vow never to buy them again because of problems with hard drives and screens. If there is any computer genius on this thread help would be greatly appreciated

I'm no genius but you may have a "rootkit" imbedded in your start up files. Gateway's have built in online inscription I've heard, it may be trying to protect itself.

I don't think gateways are any more a pile of junk than any other PC out there. We have had several in our family and they have all worked really well. I just bought a new one for the Wife.

Anyhow, I don't pay for anti virus stuff at all I just use the free Microsoft Security Essentials and it has worked very well on all our gateways. You may want to consider downloading, installing, and running it to see what it finds and can clean up.

Also, depending upon how much stuff you keep on your PC it may be a good time to just start over with a clean install.
