Scored a rear speaker adapter today for defrost

Pretty happy about it too.   I thought the entire thing was aluminum but the bottom plate is rusty.  Was this painted or was it coated with something? I cannot tell what it has on it.  Also, is there any modifications that are needed to make it fit in the package tray?  I have an original set of rear speaker covers too (now I just need the speakers to fit in there).  I need to get some screws for it obviously.....Does someone make a bolt-on 6 x 9 speaker aftermarket that will bolt in with no modifications?

ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THIS UNIT? IF SO GREAT SCORE I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR AT LEAST ONE.
I think the factory left it just raw color no paint.

thats it   I have been looking for a while too.  Last one I saw on e-bay went for $137 bucks.  I picked up the adapter for $89 and a choke pull-off for $39 since mine was missing on the carb.

Is the plate galvenized in that pic?

It looks to me to be raw cast metal, but I have never seen one in person. The last one I saw
sell was this one and it went for $299.99  WOW  to much for me.

Wow!  thats steep.  I will provavly strip mine and paint it silver then.  I have called around a few places and nobody had one.  Just by chance I asked the guy I bought the choke from and he said "Ya, I show one on the computer but hell if I know where its at"  It took about 2 weeks but he found it.

The aluminum  I will keep as-is but I will paint the other items silver or black depending what it was originally.  Maybe find the 6x9 speakers for the back (and a cheap am/fm thumbwheel, ya right).  I am excited.

I just noticed the plate that mounts the housing to the adapter for mine is wrong compared to what is shown in the picture My plate is smaller and the holes don't line up.  Dang it, I thought I had it all. Looks like I need to get or make myself a proper mounting plate.

I took the plate off today and it looks like it was silver zinc plated. 

I will have to call my favorite junkyard and see if they have the correct mounting plate for the blower housing on Monday.  I will use this picture to point out what I need.

ok I'm jelous...

all 6x9 speakers are same size an bolts on same holes so you won't have problems on that... diference are on 5x8 speakers ( passenger side ) that OEM speakers screw holes are located on different places than aftermarket.

Hey Hey..What a minute....what in the world is this? I thought if you had a factory defrost you were just stuck with one speaker...there's an adapter???

Ak there are several threads about this

you could have the defrost and double rear speaker if you asked but is MORE THAN A RARE option asked by buyers aparently...

aparently was more tipical on E and C bodies.

the adapter was used to install on same hole the blower and a 6x9 speaker. speaker lined up with tray hole and blower offset to rear. there is no mistery on how is installed than bolt the upper hole dwon the tray same as blower or speaker itself.

Some assemblyes had a rear brace to better support between tray and the "ear" of the adapter ( top view pic is vissible )

does anyone have one in a 69?  I tried to fit this in mine over christmas and it looks like it hits the v shaped trough on the package tray.  looks like about 3 inches away.  One thing it seems is the speaker holes are not 6 x 9 (but I had 6 x 9 speakers in there until a month ago, new holes were drilled for it when they were put in).  Is there a different adapter for a charger or a different package tray that went in when they were built?  I see why the mounting bracket for my defrost is different then the 6 x 9, it lines up with the holes in my tray.

Well this explains why the aftermarket speakers on mine  fit on one side of the back but not the other......wish I had the defroster!  Nice score Spartan! Andy
