Felt it here in Newburgh, too. Funny thing is, the building where my office is shakes more when they bring an excavator into the shop.

Dude.. I'm here in central VT at work and felt it. Wife is calling her parents in NoVa.

USGS has some good info:

It was shaking here in the Outer Banks, SC. No damage but it was definitely moving things in the house. That's a first for me. They upgraded it to 5.9, centered near Richmond.

BrianShaughnessy

My test floor here on the 2nd floor here at work in Poughkeepsie NY was rockin.     Called home,  the house was rockin also.

First time I ever felt one.     No apparent damage in the vicinity.

I'm on Long Island too and felt it.  Went to the USGS site.  5.9 centered around Louisa, VA (NW of Richmond) at about 3 miles deep.  Very shallow and why it was felt so far away.  I'm on the 4th floor of the hotel and stuff was defenitely moving.  Crazy!

Wimps? It's not a wimp thing if it's just something you aren't used to, like when Ponch had to scrape frost off his windshield in So Ca & froze his fingers.

Felt a little jiggle here in Toronto. I was on the phone with someone in New Jersey at the time. He said "Hey I think we are having a earth quake the building just moved"  I said, you better look out your window for the mushroom cloud in case it is something more nefarious!  :D

Been an hour and cell towers are still jammed up with call traffic!

I have a non-quake related call to make, please make room, haha  :icon_smile_big:

I didn't feel it... 3.5 hours from Richmond, but my co-workers did.

Now they will have to upgrade the seismic zones on the east coast.  Should create a lot of construction work in the area to bring buildings up to the NEW codes.  There's always a bright side. :icon_smile_big: :icon_smile_big:

Most all of us west/left coasters especially here in Cali are pretty use to them, don't even seem to notice much until above 5.0 on the Richter scale, hope nobody got hurt or lost a cool Mopar..

Yeah, where I was it wasn't really dramatic...more curious, like whoa, was that an earthquake?? Many here never felt it before, that's why it's such a big deal... ;)

I was asleep at the time it happened so either I slept through it and the dog didnt do anything or we did not feel it in West Milford.  My wife felt it in Rockaway at her job yet another part of Rockaway at my daughters daycare did not feel it.  My dad felt it in Boonton, NJ at my grandmothers house yet in another part of the house, my grandmother and mother did not feel it. :shruggy:

Good point.  Many new elevators do have seismic sensors for earthquakes.  I felt my truck rock back and forth in Milford Ct.

bull

We had a 5.6 magnitude early morning quake here in Oregon in 1993 which was interesting. ;D But then for the next 3 days or so the news crews went around interviewing people on the radio and TV asking people about it and all they could come up with was about a million variations of "I just woke up and everything was shaking." That got real old after about two hours.

I was working on a handicap lift on a school bus when it happened, The back door banged on the lift and the bus rocked, I thought we must have got a gust of wind but the door hit the lift like 3 times. Then someone about 10 minutes later mentioned an earthquake.

Now that i've experienced one, I have to wonder what all those pansies out in CA screaming about when they get one.  :hah:

It's terrible that you are all making light of this.  Think of all the poor, unfortunate souls who were enjoying games of Jenga when the devastation hit.

Remember guys back east especially in the older historic cities like DC the buildings don't have earthquake resistant construction, a lot of mason block & brick construction, they don't build anything for earthquake protection like we do out here on the west coast.. It's a big deal with all the outdated building codes & building practices, they are still using on the east coast.. we have far better constructed buildings for the shake, rattle & roll of an earthquake then they have back east... I hope no one was effected too badly... I've lived thru many of these thing, being a west coast, mainly California & Alaska guy my whole life & kind of take for granted that most people aren't used to them, like were are here in the west...  :Twocents:

I have been in Quantico, VA all week.  I was teaching a class at OCS and our projector mounted on the ceiling almost broke off on a students head while all the shaking was going on..

Of course I evacuated the students quickly...    East Coast "people" don't take kindly to earthquakes.  I was a little shocked that we were experiencing one in VA of all places...  interesting.

Be back in NC Friday.

I can't take credit for it but, some one on another site said as a joke (for all of those who don't have a sense of humor)...  :2thumbs:  Pres. B. As a native Californian, and as such the butt of an endless lifelong string of CaliFornicator jokes, its feels GREAT to poke fun at our Eastern friends and their reaction regarding their "huge" earthquake.  What a bunch of wimps!!!!

Funny thing, on Monday night, my wife & kid were watching a YouTube video of a live TV news segment filmed during the East Coast quake (the reporter FREAKED OUT - causing wife & kid to snicker at him).  AT THAT INSTANT, we had a 3.6 quake here in NorCal.  Karma is funny.

[PS - Glad no one got hurt and the damage seems mild]
