Well, we've been waiting all year and are finally on vacation! To be exact, we're three days into our 2 week vacation at the Outer Banks, NC. Having a great time, not a worry in the world then BAM! Hurricane Irene!! :brickwall: It's forcast to become a category 3 storm by Thursday with 115mph winds and is likely headed directly for us! Crap!  :RantExplode: We rented this beach house for 2 weeks and we may have to evacuate by this weekend!  :flame: Unfortunately, there's only one way on and off this place, so at best, the traffic will be a nightmare. In any case, I don't plan on having a hurricane party and we will be out of here if it is gets too crazy. Not exactly the vacation I had planned    :rotz:

That sucks Bob, sorry to hear that.  If it were me by myself, I'd stay.  Screw it.  If it were me with my wife and son, I'd leave.   :Twocents:

Good luck, whichever way you decide. :2thumbs:

The Aquamax...yes, this bike spent 2 nights underwater one weekend. (Not my doing), but it gained the name, and has since become pseudo-famous. :)

Thanks guys for the words of encouragement!

As of now, they are predicting a category 3 storm hitting the east coast/Carolinas late Friday or Saturday and last through Sunday. If this is the case we will most likely get out Thursday evening, hopefully before the mass exodus on Friday. I'll try to get a hotel room somewhere west of here and come back Monday...it's supposed to be a beautiful day!!

I was on a cruise boat a few years back when a hurricane chased us back to port a day early which meant we had to skip a port.  Bad part was that our flight didn't leave until the next day so we had no choice but to ride it out.   :scratchchin:  Made for an interesting night. . . .  :eek2:
Tomorrow is promised to NOBODY . . . .

you could always visit us in Panama , Spirit air flys cheap , the water is warm & beaches deserted & hurricanes go north , Panama has not had a hurricane hit because they deflect off the northern part of south america which is north of us .
I know maybe next time !!

That's a good plan!

I know when Rita hit SE Texas in '05, its was a clusterf*** trying to get anywhere for a couple days leading up to it.

As for the weather after, yeah, it'll probably be beautiful, just watch out for junk on the beaches.  :yesnod:

I have some wealthy relatives living down that way. My cousin owns a mountain down there somewhere right on the ocean. His house and grounds are located in the caldera of the extinct volcano. I've never been there myself, but my wife & daughter have been there a number of times. They tell me it's absolutely wonderful there, once you get past the whole Butler, Maid and servants stuff. Us poor folk ain't use to that

His Parents live there as well; they have a compound down there in Panama City. Same deal... Butlers, Maids, etc... God forbid you touch a dirty dish after dinner, someone could go into shock!

Someday I'll get down that way myself... maybe this coming year

Well, having lived in SE Texas all my life except my years in the Marine Corps, I have been through numerous hurricanes and tropical storms and can tell you :   If you are staying in a beach house or anywhere near the water, leave ASAP if they tell you to leave. As far inland as I am now (about 80 miles), I ain't running from the water, I am hunkering down from the wind and rain no matter how strong the storm is forecasted to be at landfall. They always seem to go down a little in strength upon landfall anyway.

Bottom line is you run from the water and hide from the wind. As a side story, because of hurricane Irene hitting the east coast, we will get hotter and dryer air here (Houston area) this weekend and the first of next week to the tune of possible 109 degree actual temp. days! A good bit of that rain would be appreciated here!

It really sucks to be on your vacation and hope it curves out to sea before getting to N.C. as they usually do.

sixty8charger

I wouldn't even chance it being on the outer banks.  My family is in New Bern, and I feel confident that we won't experience anything detrimental, But I would at least get a little more inland than the outer banks.

It will still be a memorable vacation.. thats for sure!

Thanks guys. They issued a mandatory evacuation effective 8am Thursday, so we'll be packing up and leaving. The only problem is going to be getting back over the bridge once it's over. Apparently, residents and land owners can show a pass issued back in 2008/2009 or a tax bill to get back over the bridge. Renters like us are S.O.L.

Well, we have sucessfully moved about 160 miles inland and are at a Holiday Inn along with hundreds of other refugees. We should be okay here, but the storm is still supposed to be lively this far in. We are hoping to be able to return on Sunday or Monday. The traffic out was surprisingly light but we left kind of late.

Unfortunately, the storm is forecast to move up the coast and hit home in NY also. We will probably have some cleaning up to do when we get back. Oh well, just another chapter...right now I'm totally spent and need sleep. Thanks everyone for your concern. Talk soon...

 I'll leave that up to those brave souls that work for the Weather Channel.

I posted this on the other tread but I guess I'll do it here too :shruggy:...We just got back to the hotel from playing disc golf. I never heard of it before but it's pretty popular here in NC. It's the same as golf but you use a small frisbee instead of a club and ball. We figure it will be the last outdoor activity we will be able to do for a while.  :scratchchin:

Anyhoo...the first bands of rain are just hitting here now. It should be an interesting night and day tomorrow. We're in a pretty big hotel so we should be okay. I'll keep you posted.

We just got back tonite from our 2-week trip to Myrtle Beach SC, Bob. Made it back to NJ just in time. Had just enough time to hurricane proof the house, took in all patio furniture, filled the cars/truck with gas, etc. Two of the local gas stations here were closed & out of gas already.
Of course, we have no food in the house from being away, so I'll have to brave the supermarkets tomorrow morning. From what I've heard the shelves at the stores are bare as well.
Be safe!

Glad to hear you made it back ok!  :yesnod: Stay safe and keep us posted!

We woke up to a dark room with no electric this morning, which isn't a good sign considering that we haven't felt the full brunt of the storm yet. I went downstairs (we're on the sixth floor and used the stairs) to find out what was happening and the power came back on, thankfully. Just in case, I went to the Hess station next door and got some flashlights. We lost power again briefly a few minutes ago, so I'm thinking this will be norm throughout the day. The people here at the hotel have been amazing. They are normally not pet-friendly, but are allowing pets for evacuees. Very nice staff here.

The worst of the storm should be past us by tonight. Boy, I'm glad we evacuated. I'm sure it's not much fun on the Outer Banks right now...

bobs66440

Well, we made it back home from our very eventful earthquake/hurricane vacation. We were able to get back to the beach house on Tuesday and salvage the rest of the week. The weather was perfect but there was a lot of damage there. Fortunately, they are used to it so they pick up and move on.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the folks here. There was a huge amount of flooding and there are still some here without power. Most of the roads are opened back up but there was much loss. It seems minor compared to VT, but it doesn't do much to ease the pain. We were very lucky at my home, we just lost a tree.

On this link, under 8/31/11 click on "Aerial photos of flooding in Orange County"

That will give a small idea of what happened here. There are other galleries there too from this area.
