First just let me say that i know very little about car audio systems. I put a sony xplode gt240 cd deck in my charger with 2 small speakers in the dash top in the stock location and two 4 way 180 watt sonys in the rear deck. The setup has lots of volume, but not a lot of base, I ran the subwoofer cables and amp wiring to the trunk but I'm not sure what to put in now. Should I put an amp on the rear speakers? If so how big? Should I hook up another amp and subwoofer in the trunk? Does the base get through OK from the trunk? Any particular brand names? Anyone with any insight into a setup like this please advise.  Thanks.   Rob

For speakers you want to match output watts with capacity of speaker as close as possible. Driving 180 watt rated speakers with 25 watts is like hitting a big nail with a tiny hammer, you loose effect. In your case you can't drive base as the larger magnets are dampening it as they "expect" a 3-6 X stronger signal. I have a Sony in my Cherokee driving factory speakers and it works very well. Check Crutchfield's online and I'll see if I can find a link to a good car audio sight I found awhile ago for you.

Check this out....  (hold on my link is screwing up)

I have a newer model Sony in my car with about the same speaker setup.
I really don't think you need an amp for your speakers but a subwoofer would be a huge improvement.

The GT240 has a subwoofer output so you're good to go there.

My sub is under the passengers seat. It's a JVC CS-BB2 which was the only one I could find that would fit under the seat.
Unfortunately JVC discontinued it.  :flame:   It works really well for it's size.

Unless someone else now makes one that would fit under the seat, I would buy a powered sub and mount it right behind the rear seat.

It's not a midlife crisis, it's my second adolescence.

If you have the money and are interested in really good sound in your car then get an amp for the front and rear speakers of the car.

You dont need to "match" speaker wattages to amps so dont worry about that.  The watts rated on car stereo stuff doesnt mean much
because there isnt a universal standard for how it is supposed to be rated, and different companys do it different ways.

Ive seen a $30 amp rated for 500 watts a channel.  And a $500 amp rated for 50 watts.

A sub in the trunk will work good. Tends no to be as good in a modern car but it does work.

Stay away from the sony xplode line of amps and speakers, I think is sounds horrid.

Audio is VERY subjective, so get an idea of what your looking from some online forums, then go listen, pick what
sounds good to YOU.

Thanks, guys. I do believe I need more power  :yesnod:, so I'm going to try an amp on the rear speakers first, then we'll see.

Forgot to give some of the better name brands.

Not in any order......

Alpine
JL Audio
Rockford Fosgate
Kicker

I also like some of the Audiobahn amps. I own 3 of them personally.   But mostly people will say they are junk.

Keep in mind unless your upgrading the alt. output you could not have enough power to power your power!  My Sony has 52 watts X 4 channels out of the box.
