I really hate these, whats it worth posts but ::)

looked at a 68 Charger today. First the good thing.
This guy actually WANTS TO SELL IT!!  Not some coulda woulda shoulda story. The owner said his cousin and brother were the ones workin' on it. His cousin moved to Montana. He could barely answer any questions, he was definetly not a "car guy". The owner says he has MS. It looked to me as if I gave him a nickle he wouldn't have one to rub against it/'nuff said!
now the bad??
Originally a 318 auto premium trim level car. Now a 440/ auto. Cars is parked tight in a rental storage place. could not see rear of car. was blue/black vynil top. top in nice shape. Looked to hav quarters replaced but couldnt see the rt side due to the way it was parked. Car was bought this way. back seat very nice/carpets out panels including window cranks ect. Raiod hole was cut out at one point in time. Did hav the clock/tach in it. I was surprised to see that in a 318 car.
doors looked good but no handles or trim, saw some frame rust but not that bad . it did have drivers floor replaced / owner claimed his brother did it. small hole on pass side along rail. ront seats in car but loose. buckets seats(needed recover) with some sort of console that did not look original.
440 w/headers and aftmrkt carb and intake. all wiring laying on the motor, fenders off, hood loose, no battery or cables to hook a battery to. core support and inners replaced but loose. asked for fender tag..... i was asked if that was important...... Grill and bumper appeard intact. He has no clue where all the removed parts are. he would ask his brother and call me tomorrow......
now the ugly..
7 GRAND????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

My personal opion 7k is to much for that car, for 7k that car need to be complete its 318 car so its not worth that money. If the boby and everything look in good shape i would max offer him 5k, but thats just my opion.
Good luck thou!

:iagree: Maybe can even lowball them even cheaper, take some $$$ with you to wave around.  One time I looked at a 318 69, I saw in a paper, about a 2 hour drive away, the ad said 3500, when I looked at it in person, When I arrived it was 2500, by the time I left it was 1800.
He call me the next day at my house and said he would take 1400. Any way he was a pretty young guy and got his girlfriend pregnant and was looking to get rid of it pretty quick. Long story short I went back up there 2 days later and it was gone. But hey I found a 69 Rt a few months later and bought it.

Well, in my honest opinion, it's hard to tell until you can see the whole car. If there really isn't much rust (problem rust any way) and the interior is all there then he's probably close on the price. If the rest of the parts can't be found and you can't pull the car out to look it over completely then there's no way I'd give that much. It's a parts car in a box and $3-5k is more in line depending on the quality of the parts. If the grill and taillights are nice and at least most of the interior then you have to factor that into the price. It's easy to spend $2,000+ on just those items. The good news is that it doesn't sound like there's anything to make you keep it original so you can make it exactly the way you want. Before wasting any money at all be sure to closely inspect the rear frame rails, trunk, rear crossmember, valence corners, and wheelhouses for rust. Also check the torsion bar crossmember since they already told you a floor pan was replaced. If there's anything more than surface rust on the frame I'd seriously consider passing on it. Maybe it's just where I live but big piles of rust sell for $3k around here.

ChargerSG:  It doesn't matter what drivetrain had originally because the 440 will more than compensate for the lack of a numbers matching 318. The value would probably only go down if it was an original R/T that was missing the engine. Don't underestimate the value of a nice 318 car. :D

FYI - my first 68 Charger was a 318 car and had a tach and the Spyder mags on it. Weird but true.

that is all true, BUT on the flipside. he did say he saw some frame rot already. and we're not even talking the back end of the car yet.. if the frame gets rusted, chances are the car is gonna be pretty ate up. just my guess
tell ya what. i have a 68 charger i just got last weekend, 318 car, all original. paint too. motoris seized from sitting now. frame is perfect, car is complete, and all together. only needs trunk pan, lower quarters, and a little work around rear window(has some fiberglass). i'll sell you that car for 7500 if you want it. MUCH better starting point of a car, and hey, sure that other one now has a 440, but this one is #'s matching.. and a 440 can be had for little money

The guy is supposed to call me today. I'm curious to see if he can move it away from the wall of the storage garage. It has a flat on the left rear and crap piled up on the other side. I did not see to bad a rust under back window... maybe trunk pan is ok? Did I mention that the upper rails that the hood hinges go to do not even exsist. New skirts are there but no rails. And in its current state I dont think it can be started. Also it doesnt seem like any one can I D the 440 thats in it. 4 T 440... heard trenton engine plant(thats fine) but what was the year and application????  maybe I can get some pics of this so all you can see.

Travis has an entire yard full of 440s. :D

They really aren't that expensive and swapping one into a Charger is pretty simple - and cheap.

Troy: I dont, and i do care about the drivetrain since im driving a numbermatching 318(all my cars as it) soo expensive aint a old 440(non running). But this one dosent have the original 318, soo thats what i ment in not being much to have a 318 with a f..... up 440, if its been a RT 440 with non running uncomplete is could more understand those kind of money but not on 318 car with unknown 440....
