Hey guys, not been on here for a while, but finances are hopefully soon to change for the better, (touch wood!), so I am finally able to restore my '68 properly. HOWEVER, I have another question... I have researched converting either a 2007 or 2011 'new' Charger to two doors. I know it been widely discussed, and several examples built, BUT, my big question is "IS it possible to build a 'NEW' '68 Charger from restoration parts? I see that there are now available new roof pressings for '68s so would it be possible to build the whole car?

help me out please guys... I'm thinking again either Hugger, or GoMango, or Sublime  'resto mod' with a 6.1...

What do y'all think?

Edit:

Expensive? Yes
Time consuming? Yes
No provenance? No.

BUT IS IT POSSIBLE....?
I'd rather push a Charger than drive a Mustang.. which is lucky..

There are new pressings of the top outer skin of the roof.  But we're a long way from a whole new CAR yet.

Let's take that roof skin example:   There's a lot more to a 1968 Charger's roof than that outer skin.  That skin sits on top of several layers of inner framework sheetmetal.  There are metal hoops that hold up the headliner fabric.  Clips that hold the edges of the metal hoops in place.  There are metal trim pieces that run around the edges of the headliner.  There is an inner set of metal pieces with sawtoothed edges around the rear window to hold the headliner fabric in place there.  There is the chrome that goes on the weatherstripping assembly above the windows and below the driprail.  There is the mount for the rearview mirror and the mounts for the visors.  There are unique tapering shaped bolts that hold the seatbelts anchored.  Etc . . .  none of what I just listed is reproduced as far as I know.

This is just the roof.  The rest of the car is similar.  You can get the outer skin & flooring but that still leaves a whole lot of the final car missing.

If you want a 68 Charger then count on fixing up an old one.  The resto job is easier than it used to be but it's still necessary.  Even if you could get 100% of the car new it would still cost you several times the price of getting what you want using a vintage car as a starting point.

Thanks Mike, you make excellent points. I already have a '68 and of course understand that it would be much more costly, but I still think it would be pretty amazing to have a 'proper' new Charger!

Nevermind the work it takes to make the new metal parts fit with the orginal car. If you didnt have the orginal car to make parts match up with you could end up really messed up

Yep yep, for sure. I have an original car, my thought process was just 'would it be possible?'. I understand it may be prohibitively expensive, but I think it would be cool nonetheless....
