quick question. I have a 727 tranny that has been rebuilt. Numbers are PK3515846  A-727-B  and 433-3. transmission was in a 69 charger which originally came with a 318. however, i believe that this transmission is out of a 1971 dodge. It was mounted behind a 383 that has since been trashed. I need to know how to identify if this is a big block or small black transmission.

If it was mounted on a 383, I think there is a good chance it's a big block trans.  :scope:

Maybe I don't understand the question :scratchchin:

I would have thought is was a small block since it is stamped A-727-B. but that is the questions how else can I tell if it is a Big Block or Small Block.

Torqueflite bellhousings and bolt patterns are specific to each engine family. Slant 6 Torqueflites will only bolt to slant 6 engines, small block Torqueflites will only bolt to small blocks, and big block Torqueflites will only bolt to big blocks.
Although big block 727s and small block 727s to not interchange between engine families, the internal parts do interchange.

If you look at the trans. from the front with 12:00 being up. A bigblock trans has the starter at the 3:00 position, the smallblock has the starter at the 4:00 position......And of course it's always 5:00 somewhere!

PK3515846 is from a '71 383-4 or '72 400-4.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.
