Sacrifices?

Most of us get wrapped up in our hobby/obsession: Chargers.  What are some good stories about some of the personal sacrifices that we've made to pursue our passion?  Obviously time, $$ go into it, but what about other stuff?

:popcrn:

Ghoste

I think my biggest sacrifices have been time away from my family and that isn't one that I'm proud of.  Other than that it's been little things.  Walked to work for a few years because I wouldn't buy a second car.  I've skipped lunch when I only had enough change in  my pockets to either buy lunch or get a car magazine.  For me, it's really the same as everyone else, doing some overtime and not going partying with the boys.

I was in the garage one time. My wife yelled to me "you touch that car more then you touch me". I think she was getting jealous.

There have been quit a few for me over the last 14 years of owning the car, and trying to get it on the road, but the one of the biggest things effected was the house that I'm living in.  When the Mrs and I were house hunting, I insisted on a 3 garage stall place, because I was sick of paying for storage, and my Charger was not going to sit outside.  I passed up on many really nice places, and ended up in the house we're in, which really isn't all that great.  But it has 3 stalls.

A crapload of cool guitars. Not just for money to buy the cars and parts, but to be able to take the time to work on them I need to compensate my income.

I use to be really into skiing and climbing but about the time the charger came into my life was the end of those hobbies. Which is probably good because my body was pretty much so starting to tell me that I was getting to old for those kind of activities. I still go skiing every once and a while but not nearly as obsessed to it as I use to be. So I don't know if I would call it a sacrifice. More like a growing out of one hobbie and into a new one.  ;D

My first '69 was my Passion...  Then I started a family, so with her coaxing I sold it.  Never again would I sell my car for my woman.  I would make things work-out somehow...  Next woman I'm serious with will be told up-front the R/T SE and I do not part.

THEN, she came-back again (after being married to some other dude for 2weeks), and I sold-off my 12k dollar gun collection for 2k to get us into an apartment for 3 weeks.  Rrrrrr    :flame:   Honestly it wasn't all about her, but my son.  It was awesome to be with him.

I never sacrificed anything, I do what I can, when I can.I have my priorities straight. No offense to anyone but it is only a car.  :icon_smile_wink:

Not entirely. I decided to share my time a little more. Besides, touching her, at times, can be more pleasurable!

I bet you don't say that to people who come up to you outta no where and comment about how cool or nice it is.
If you do, then you should sell your so called "it only a car" to someone who can actually appreciate it.

The car is part of my life. Not more important that my life.
The post doesnt say sacrificing life or family....it states sacrifices.
My interpritation to the post is that it's takling about how passionate you are about they hobby. Passion to something will require some kind of sacrifice. Be it time, money ect.

I agree it should not interfere with family (nothing should be more important to that) but you've got to believe that it does take some kind of sacrifice to restore or care for a nestalgic classic car vehicle. Don't you?

I'm not trying to start a fight with you just don't understand how someone can say "it's only a car" on a site dedicated to restoring and helping people understand what the dodge Charger means to all of us.

I had to think hard, but there isn't too much that's been sacrificed for the cars. If that was the case, then I'd have myself in some deep trouble. I don't mean with my wife, I mean in general. Like if I went ahead & ordered the crate Hemi I always wanted instead of fixing the daily driver, I'd be screwed. If there's been any sacrifice at all, it's been the time for the cars. I've had some minor restoration needed on one of them for a long time that I just haven't found the time to do.

I've taken the wife & daughter on trips, taken them camping, bought things that we all needed, & things for the house as well. Had to spend a lot of time & money clearing & leveling an area near the garage for the camping trailer we all use. If there's one thing that is sacrificed for the cars, I'd have to say it's probably some money that could've been saved or invested into something else besides cars. Maybe that doesn't count since the cars have become investments themselves?

The way I see it, there will always be time for the car later. And if here isn't & I drop dead, then so what? Can't use the cars anyway.

Yes, Grasshopper, you grasp the intention of this post.

Believe me, my family comes first also.  I have waited 14 years to start my resto, because I'm raising a family.  But "just a car"?  A frickn' Accord is "just a car".

I have delayed my move to Spain on this laters 3 or 4 years waiting to finish my project at least to a weekend local show condition for several reasons....

-Everything is cheaper in Venezuela, parts and job.
-Shipping from USA is also Cheaper to here.
-Still NOS Stuff at dealers down here,  impossible to find in Europe dealers. Also Junkyards here with Old American cars, that In Europe don't exist
-I don't want to get headaches in Spain becasue my car with some trouble, so I want to get my car there in the best conditions as possible to forgett abot it and just worry about search a job, what is not easy when somebody is arriving to a new country to live.

Vacations!! My wife would like to vacation someplace once a year, and it was bothering her that we couldn't because we didn't have the money. I was doing things with the cars. Finally, she told me one year that "Next year we are going somewhere." We went to Florida to Disney. That was in 2003. We didn't go anyplace the next couple of years because we bought a 2001 Ram and I had to rebuild my 440 and I cleaned up my engine compartment a little. This year we are going to visit her uncle in Pheonix for a week. I need to do this more. It is fun to watch your family having a good time.

P.S.- Even though my wife likes cars, trips involving car shows don't count as vacations to her. ;D

Not sure if I'd call that a "sacrifice", maybe a "sound financial move"...  Divorce wasn't my idea, but I'll be damned if I don't have a whole lot better financial situation, and a YOUNGER girlfriend.  :D

I haven't sacrificed much for my cars/trucks either. The needs of my family has always come first, that's why my Charger has been patiently waiting since 1993.
A growing family isn't going to wait for a guy to finish his projects. If I could have made more money along the way, I would have possibly been further along with my projects...but then again, my wife would have probably found better use for that money. :-\

Now my kids are grown & self-supporting for the most part & I should be able to get going on what I want soon. Hopefully I don't have to put money toward any weddings any time soon. ;D

I did what i could when i could for 6 years with out much sacrifice. Went through several relashionships
moving the car here and there. Then I met my wife , on are first date I told here I love my charger and
my drag racing and if you don't like it then you are with the wrong man. Turned out she loved my charger almost as much I do. She helped me out with the resto kind of cool both of us under the car working on it. And no need for her to get jealous of her, when i put the back seat in the charger for the first time we
had to Cristen it,(allot of room in there with out the buckets). But the 7th year I couldn't take it anymore
I wanted it on the road and for a year I spent allot of time in the garage and away from my daughter which I'm not happy about. I got a loan, maxed out my credit cards, and spent all my extra money on her. But
now she is done and me and the family have a blast with her going for cruises or to a show. Would I do all over again?    HELL YA ;D

GTX

I had to move out of a good apartment because the landlord didn't like my car.
I've also sold a '67 Mustang, '68 Firebird convert, a Fender Strat and amp, an AR-15 and a couple of arcade machines ( Star Wars, Ms Pacman) for money for my cars.
The Mustang is my blower, the Firebird is pretty much the engine in the GTX, the rifle is into the GTX and the Strat and amp and arcade machines are in the Charger plus a bunch of cash in both and still going.  I also sold a '69 GTX for spare cash and parts too.
Oh yea, we cancelled going to Mopars at the Strip last year for my engine for the Charger.

Just had to decide where the priorities were. I really miss the Firebird but I'm more happy with the Mopars.

I'm with you Mike!!!! Funny how with one less income we end up with more money. :yesnod: I was getting divorced from wife #2 during that summer I spent  block sanding the General, remember? I found it to be good therapy, it kept me out of the bottle for those very intense months.  :boxing_smiley:
As far as sacrifices, the money doesn't bother me, I go to work every day and make more. The real sacrifice is the time, you have only a finite amount of that: you can't "make" any more of it. Though, like I said, it kept me busy and out of trouble. The end result was worth the sacrifice. The satisfaction of doing it myself feels great, and having it done has enabled  me to enjoy some really great times, road trips, cars show etc. As long as it isn't crashed or stolen I'll have the rest of my life to enjoy it !!!! Sacrifice= worth it!!!!

Hey Mike, and Al, I with you on that sacrifice in spirit!,but that one would cost me,about 6 of my 11 Mopars, the house, the new garage, and 9 years of child support! I guess I will revert back to the bottle and continue on status quo! It's cheaper to keep her! If that fails,I will throw my tools down, and give the wife twenty miniutes of my individed attention, before getting back to work on the Dodge!
