Old School 493 Stroker

Well, I can't help myself...

This is my 493rd post, so it had to coincide with the planned 493....which is much closer to reality than a pipe-dream.

It has been so long I can't even remember all the parts I have accumulated, but nonetheless most are there.

I've got a virgin 69 block to replace my 452 (0.060" over 70 block) for the build...I say virgin tentatively, until I tear into her we won't know for sure...so in theory the 493 could be a bit bigger, lol.  I am hoping it has never been touched however...that will give me a much longer life-span for the block provided I don't throw anything out the side.  The 69 block was sourced from a New Yorker that was parked with a power steering faiulre...yes, it was a "grandma" car...but who cares, any grandma with a 440 is pretty ba in my book.  The low miles, I was told 38k, would have likely been accumulated over 2+ decades of service, lol.  I am excited to see how everything looks...it turns over great, and I've been half tempted to oil the bores and fire it up...I think I'll restrain myself though...All I've done so far is pull the 727, which still had the dust shield...try to find that in a B or E body, haha.

I've got a lot of parts...here is  a quick list for the post:

Crank, Rods, Eddy Heads (fully ported), 1.6RR, springs (I'll have to change, the guy I got them from stepped up to B-1s and was running a nasty roller cam), lifters (got to spend my $250 from Comp for the MMYG finally), and a few other odds and ends.  I have the cam spec'd out, just have to order it and pick out the pistons.  The rest is really just in the details.  I'll run the best intake I can with the hood closed...carb will come later.  Virgin TF727 will get built and IF I have the cash it might be coupled to a GV.

I say old school because I am going to run a solid cam...not a roller, and no hydraulic...just a good old fashioned bumpstick.  At the time I planned all this out I just read of too many guys on Moparts with similar, mild strokers having issues with the roller gear.  The one in AAM that exists runs crane gear and hasn't had any issues, but I'm cautious.  So yeah, I'll be the guy that still adjust the valves, but to me it is worth it.  The power and reliability will be key.  This is still going to be mild, but maybe on the hotter side of the line.

I've been messing with the Challenger and have just been so busy I haven't gotten much done...I won't be out much more to get it assembled...only finanical issues would be the top-end, accessories, and tranny...I wanted to have it done after college, but stuff happens.  Sort of built the Duster as a guinea pig.  I had also planned to have more done to the Charger by now, but a backlog on parts has prevented that from happening.

It'll take some time, but I know it'll be worth it in the end...I'll finally have reason to install those subframe connectors I bought back in 2000, lol.

Sounds like a good reasonable build :drool5: I have had several 383's & 400's with 4.15" strokers & full roller set ups  & my current 479ci 6bbl is a Hydraulic roller crane everything , I haven't had any issues with any of mine "yet" knock on wood.... But I didn't skimp on anything on any of the builds...

Thanks, it is so old school that "old school" is even spelled correctly   I have pictures of everything somewhere, just need to find them.  There is a nasty 500" in a 71 Challenger that runs the Crane cam and rockers, but that was the summer before they went under.  I'm a little leary of the current crop of roller lifters...granted the failures seem to be by a grassroots guy doing his own build or a somewhat hi-end race motor.  Still, I'm not one to take the risk till I feel it has been remedied...when I picked all this out that was far from happening.  I actually meant to have the cam ground back in February, but haven't gotten around to it...

:coolgleamA: just an idea  heard good things about the MP .528 solid cam  , makes good power , think a 493 would tame it a little , although it does idle good in a 440 for a big cam , makes good power too , forget the specks now , although thinking about it again , might be a little too much for street  :scratchchin:

I run the MP 528 solid in my 505 and love it, idles almost like a stock cam with 15 in vacuum and I can cruise the streets at 1200 rpm. Plant your foot above 2000 rpm and all hell breaks loose. I built the engine with the Comp XS290S but got fed up of it's street manners after a few years and swapped in the MP cam, car runs the same times on the strip but without all the tuning problems for street driving.

Yep, I debated running the 528...Andy F's book praises the thing and I have talked to him about it as well as Ron at some point in the past...about as docile as you can get on the street (idle and driveability that is) and still clicks off some flat, nasty times at the track.

I have my specs saved...since I had the money from Comp for winning the Young Guns deal, I wanted them to grind it...they couldn't handle my specs, lol.  I think I'll be going with an Ultradyne as they can grind what I want.  It isn't too far off from the 528 stick, but it should make for a very nice improvement across the board while still having good driving characteristics!  If it turns out to be too wild, doubt that happens, I can swap over to the MP for a small amount...much more budget friendly than the hyd roller.

There is a guy that runs a solid roller around town, but again, I like my chances better with the solid flat tappet.

The shop I'm using has a good relationship with Ultradyne so I should be good to go there.

Mine is an older grind, Crane Super Gold 1.6 roller rockers, w/retrofit hydraulic roller lifters, from like at least 5+ years ago now ....
