Does the tranny, (727), dipstick tube o-ring sit inside the dipstick hole in the tranny or on top of the hole? It seems like it should sit inside, but mine sits on top and has a small leak after I run it..........

It needs to go inside the bore to seal.

Man, I've been trying to get it to go in and just can't make it go, I don't have a ton of room between the firewall ('71 Charger), the 440 with headers..........

Did you oil up the oring before trying to install the tube?

Nope, I read somewhere to clean everything with brake cleaner, try to put it in dry, put form-a-gasket around the base after it's in, and wait 24 hrs before I put in the fluid......that didn't work

I have building transmissions for 10+ years...

You can either use some trans fluid or black silicone on the o-ring for the installation of the dipstick tube... you need some form of lubrication.  I usually use silicone as it will help prevent leaks.  Make sure you have the correct o-ring (only slighter larger than the tube diameter).

I have regular clear silicone, will that work?

No,No, No -  Clear silicone  is NOT compatiable with ATF

I use door ease or ATF . personally I have never used anything but . Just make sure the bore in the case is clean and dry

Avoid wiggling the tube while trying to push it into the case, wiggling can cause the tube to crack at the indent where the O ring sits. Many leaks attributed to the O ring are actually cracks in the tube.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

So, whats the best way to put it in if you can't wiggle?

Have your girlfriend/wife put it in for you. Problem solved.  :2thumbs:

As advised earlier, slather it with lube and twist slightly as you insert it. (works with mammals and dipstick tubes)

with lube on it, it'll slide right in

we are still talking about dipsticks, are we not ?

Welp, got the tube in with the o-ring & some lube, then break cleaner, followed by the black silicone, however, we did everything possible to get that abe to line up with the bell housing bolt to no avail. We did come up with a system using that open "loop" in the tranny housing right by the dipstick tube, secured it with a bolt and a hose clamp,  :eek2: it's pretty tight though, should hold........

John_Kunkel

If the bracket doesn't readily line up with the bellhousing bolt you probably have the wrong tube, the BB and SB tubes have a different bracket.

I actually have two, the original when the car had a 383 & a 727, and a chrome aftermarket, they are both close and if it wasn't for the Hooker Super Comp headers, they might have line up. So what we did was put a big bolt in that open "loop", or "ear", and took the dipstick tube, which is right next to that "tab with and opening", and secured it to the bolt with a hose clamp.........sits pretty good.........so far.........
