What fan should I use on my 440???

I have 440 bored 30 over with the Edelbrock RPM top end kit. It is a non a/c car with a trans cooler mounted to the front of the radiator. I had the orog. 22" factory radiator boiled and cleaned. It has the factory 6 blade fan currently on it with no clutch.

Question #! Should i use a clutch?
Question #2 What fan do you all suggest?

I'd appreciate any and all suggestions.

I would go with what you have and see what happens. Do you have a shroud for your rad?

dodgedarren

Yes I have a shroud. I will run the car and see whats happens. Thanks for the advice!

I like the clutch type fans because the mechanical ones sound like a twin engine airplane taking off when you rev the engine.

I have seen a lot of people spend a lot of money on aftermarket fans and shrouds that dont work as well as the OE stuff the car came with.  :yesnod:
1972 Charger Topper Special, 360ci, 46RH OD trans, 8 3/4 sure grip with 3.91 gear, 14.93@92 mph.
1973 Charger Rallye, 4 speed, muscle rat. Whatever engine right now?

I will start with the OE stuff and go from their. Ive read Midilion make a really good HV waterpump
that has cured allot of people over heating issues

The fan clutch many use is the Hayden 2765.  The fan dia is 18-1/2 inches for a 440 4-speed.  Not sure if that's the right dia for a auto.  Don't recall how many blades it has.  Oddly, the fan blade for a 440 4-speed (69) is the same as for a 318 with auto (69)----both with a/c.  Not sure if this applies to non-a/c.  The overheating issue is coverred in a discussion under engines, etc.  It's one of the "stickies".

What length bolt do you use to bolt the fan clutch to the water pump??
I cant seem to get the bolt in position to tighten in down.

I have been using the Flex-A-Lite 6 blade fan with a Jaguar clutch , it fits in the older B body cars

Related reply sort of...I'm planning on swapping a 318/904 with A/C, to 440/4-speed and am gonna run the same fan..We'll see if it runs hotter or not..Then, I guess I'll know if it's the block or not...Good info on the same Fans for 440 and 318 in 1969. Being an A/C car, it should have the larger radiator installed already (26" core?)

Is your car an original 440 powered R/T? I'm not 100% sure if a fixed solid fan was available on a 440, although they could be had on a 383 equipped car.

A clutch fan will perform better than a fixed fan, IMHO. For '68, it is 18" in diameter & is part# 2863215. Here is one I found quick on eBay, although there are others on there:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MOPAR-BIG-BLOCK-COOLING-FAN-440-383-CORONET-CHARGER-/290586470622?_trksid=p4506.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D3%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D1766746202372158507

An original clutch might be hard to find, however the newer ones that are included in the MP viscous fan package will work. That clutch itself is part# 4095704. You may need to run one with a shorter shaft. I am selling two of them with shorter shafts here:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,81736.0.html

If you have your build sheet, it will tell you what the last 3 digits of the clutch that is correct for your car. For example, I was able to find a correct fan clutch for my '70 R/T by my build sheet. The number on the sheet was "456", which corresponded to the correct part# 2658456 on the clutch. Correct, original fan clutches are VERY hard to find!
If not, at least get the correct fan & you may have to experiment with different clutches to find one that fits best. I have no problems with the "704" clutch installed in my '68 Charger.

Contact Mega Parts for correct fan & fan clutch attaching hardware. They sell the correct nuts/washers & special serrated fan bolts. Here is another link to what they look like (hmmm... seller looks familiar  ;) ):
