How many Amps does the fusable link that goes from bulkhead to the Ignition terminal support? I want to replace the link with a fuse holder and fuse and need to know how many AMP fuse I would need. Is this even a possibility or would I need a 100 + amp fuse to support the power the car produces? Would it depend on my alternator output?

any help would be great

Never mind I did some googlin and according to a couple forums this is a terrible idea lol.

Why is it a terrible idea? A fuse is pretty much the same thing as a fusible link - it's the weakest link in the connection. Fusible links can take higher loads for a short period of time without melting - but high amperage fuses are pretty much the same. An 80A fuse won't blow immediately. And fuses are easier to replace than fusible links.

well according to my reading because the electrical system can have voltage spikes it can cause your fuses to keep blowing without a true electrical failure while the fusable link will take the temporary increase without failing..only when there is a constant overload does it start melting.  Other options ive read include using circut breakers that act like the ones in your house where you just flip the breakers, Or using buying a housing and using Maxi fuses.
In the mean time I think Im going to just buy one from the autostore and in the mean time keep researching.

fit a 30 amp maxi fuse !!it will blow at 60amps ,  might be able to get away with a 20amp , have same set up but went nutts & split the three power cables  that supply the headlight switch  ignition switch & fuse box  with seperate 15 amp blade fuses also , total over kill !  started doing the mad amp gauge by pass then got carried away & went into the new m&h dash harness    :yesnod: & engine harness & added blade fuses every where  alternator , regulator  etc !!! total over kill .. ran seperate thick thick gauge wire from alternator etc etc, seperate power distribution box, done all sorts of changes , & up rating   etcetc  while i was there ,   have not got any fisible links now  , just blade fuses , some say you should not replace the fusible links !  etcetc , but have seen you can have a big ole dash burn in a B-body & the fusible link is still intact , this way every thing is covered !!

who cares  ! peace of mind  , was worried about the car not looking stock under the hood , to the untrained eye , don't look that much out of place though !!!  but have changed soo much on the under side anyway   :yesnod:

Check these fuses. They are available in ratings from 50 to 500A - and they can take spikes as well.

It seems a whole lot easier to just buy a fusable link?  :shruggy:

Bought and installed a 16Gauge fusible link yesterday, seems to be doing its job fine a lot better then the 20 gauge Buss fuse I had in the inline fuse holder as a temp fix lol
