I thought that 3:91  never came in chargers, if true, why? I've seen them plenty in roadrunners from factory  but never saw them in any charger order paperwork.  Maybe in 4 speed vehicle?    Mine had 3:23 w/ 383hp.  Did they come w/440 cars?

Option code D57 for 3.91:1 gears was an option in 1970 Chargers however was not available on R/T models.

Ghoste

However it was available in a lot of other Chargers.  What model year were you wondering about?

3.91's are not common in Chargers. They were available with the 383 only 69-71.

BUT, in spite of popular belief, they weren't all that common in any other Mopar musclecar either.

True. Only about 7-8% of the RR's and SBs got them. 3.91's in Chargers was less than that.

I assume first and foremost, that fuel mileage was a concern, then would be the Charger was Dodge's "Upscale" musclecar. Kinda like the 1957-58 Chrysler 300 Letter series..."Bankers" hot rods.

No, they were not 'special order'. They were a regular option just like a radio, A/C, PDB, etc.

A13? Where'd that come from?

As stated above, they were only available with the 383-4bbl; auto or manual.

the most common place for 3.91's  is A100 trucks and vans

dodgechar

Found  code a13- 69 , in ,chrysler corp. production option code book  69- 71,  4th printing 1/1996.  Still a good gear for this 440/727  69?  Where all 3:91  posi?  If they mostly in trucks for bottom end torque right.

No, Not all 3.91 gear sets were Sure Grip....I have run up on a couple peg legs...MOST of the A100 Van 3.91 gear sets with the Sure Grip unit were of the lighter duty because most had the Leaning tower of power, Slant 6...(IE: "741")

The only trouble w/ these is highway speed is somewhat limited of course, but light to light is always fun. Im thinking a overdrive  may be in the future.  Budget allowing.

Yessir  -  This one has the lowly 3.55's    ;)

dodgechar

3:55 would be a perfect  in between compromise alright. Probly alot cheaper then overdrive too.  SURE GRIP of course.  Nice ride

i run 4.10s with a 28" tire and i think its totally fine. switching from 26" tire to a 28" tire made a big difference imo.

My father has a 1968 H code 383 HP charger, and it has a 4-speed and 3.91 suregirp rearend in it (Tag on the pumkin says so).....  He bought it used at a Ford dealership in the summer of 1969, and has never done anything to the rearend.  It also came with a 67 steering wheel, so I gather it was an early production model.  Only other steering wheel Ive seen like it was on a 67 coronet.

Not sure if it was supposed to optioned that way, or even if it was a legitimate option, but all I can say is "thats whats on the car".... and its been on there ever since he bought it.

Amen to that.  I fall into the 4:10 28 inch tire crowd but I dread the 5 hour drive to the Nats each year.
