Actually, one of the many good things to report about the new ZF 8-speed transmission, is that, according to Chrysler's blog, the new 8-speed will be available in the "2012 Dodge Charger SE, SXT and R/T models, as well as the high-performance SRT8."

Here's a snap shot of the new shifter:

In addition to the "four mile-per-gallon increase...to an EPA-rated 31 mpg," the new transmission helps cut down "emissions...by nearly 11%." All of this helps boost Chrysler's average MPG, securing a future of high-horsepower, naturally-aspirated HEMI-powered RWD Mopars.

While, I and most performance enthusiasts would advocate the inclusion of a manual 6-speed option for the R/T and SRT8 Chargers, the ZF 8-speed promises "sporty, quick shifts...possible as a result of multiple parameters through a Sport shift mode that requires simple driver input. At the rear of the shifter is a gate that allows for down- and up-shifting by the driver. Once the vehicle is in the Sport mode, the driver can use either the console-mounted shifter or a pair of paddle controls located on the steering wheel."
