I'm trying to start my engine after a rebuilt. When i turn the key the starter turns the engine about half around and then its just trying. The wires on the battery start to smoke after 5 seconds and i have the feeling someting is short-curcuited. The starter has been sitting idle for 2 years but is otherwise new. is it normal to see smoke from the wire after only 5 seconds of key-on ? any ides on where to look ?
The engine turns fine when using a wrench on the crank...

Also make sure you don't have too much spark advance. Might be trying to turn backwards.

Smoke is not normal though. You've probably got damage from arcing now. A new starter is probably in order.
