i found a 413 really cheap with motor and trans but i didnt know if it was capable of putting some serious power to the wheels. i've never heard of the 413 until today. let me know what you think.

What year and what did it come out of? Early 413 "wedge" motors came in cars - later versions were "industrial" and came in everything from trucks and RVs to generators and air raid sirens. Be careful because some of the truck/RV engines have reverse cooling and oddball heads. Here's some information that may help:

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

it was in a '73 model camper. i just dont know if it is capable of being built into a pretty stout motor or if it'd be better to find a 440 somewhere

FLG

IMO your better finding a 440

Look hard enough, you can find em for dirt cheap.

there was a local 73-74 charger here with a 413, went low 13eens on the quarter. if you are making a serious effort at horse power, get a 440 and stroke it.

was a story in one of the mopar mags years ago ! guy had a 413 in a plumbcrazy  70 charger with a sixpack set up on it !! was in the mid twelves i think from memory  :yesnod: :scratchchin: :popcrn:

yea i'll prob just stick with the 440 instead. my original plan was to put a 440 in it and get it bored and stroked so i can break the 500 ci mark. i guess its always better to go with your first idea.

spinny

Yeah problem with the 413 is them industrial motors. They did some crazy stuff like mounting the waterpump so far up on the heads that your fan would be above your radiator and into your hood if you dropped it in. The camshaft was also turned by two gears spun by the crank.

You might hear is be called a high block or at least that's what I've been told.

HPP

The 413 isn't an inherently bad engine. It is after all, an RB block just like a 440, it only has the smaller 4.18 bore compared to the 440s 4.32 bore and can be built equally as strong as any 440.  A sonic check of the walls would tell you how much over bore it will accept and they can use the same stroker cranks. The truck heads can
be slightly different, they may actually cool better than car heads, but you wouldn't want them for a stroker app anyway. Anything else 440 will bolt up. If it is super cheap, it might be worth considering.

The 413 Max wedge were the first super stock engines that came out in the early 60s. They easily dominated their competition and had output in the mid to high 400 range. These led to the 426 Max wedges which then evoloved in to the "no replacement for displacement" 440. The Max Wedge heads still have some of the biggest and highes flowing ports Chrysler ever put in to the big block fmaily

Unless you already have a 440, I would use a 400 block if you're going the stroker route.  They're lighter, common enough to find, and have just as much power making potential.  I've read that they're stronger than the 440 block too.

HOTROD

I might still be going to use one , Met this guy my neighbor worked with he did all the service for dealers , he had a lot of Mopars, got my disc brakes from him ,he said its hear if I want it !!

What the Hell-Dumass !

The 413 in good running condition will be a decent mill. They made boatloads of torque and were ALL internally balanced. You could install one in the Charger and run it while you build a nice 440.
The problem comes when its time to rebuild a 413. Custom pistons are the only option if you want to get in the 9.5 compression range.

i found it for $400 motor and trans. but i found a 440 for $500 motor and trans. i think i'll pay the extra $100.  :icon_smile_big:

ACUDANUT

Same old advise..Any engine with enough money put into can deliver what you want.  I prefer the 440's too !!
