You can buy a 500GB external Seagate hard drive for around $130.  It comes with a 5 year warranty.  Check newegg.com, they run deals all the time.

I'd just go buy a USB drive at Walmart and back your machine up to it. They sometimes come with a software to back the entire machine to it but if it was me I would just copy your files and pictures to the USB drive ever few weeks and call it good. On a crash reinstall your OS and programs and then move your files back over. I've seen times at work where the backup machine backed up a computer everyday. The computer was ill or had software problems and your backup program would continue to back up the ill machine. Then the machine dies and you reinstall from the back up and now you have a new ill machine in the same state is was the day before it died.
