The rumor is true

Well, the rumor is true, my Daytona is going to be restored on season 2 of Graveyard Carz.  Here's the story if your interested.  It all happened as a fluke phone call a month ago.  I was looking on ebay at a wiper motor and contacted the lady at Passion4mopars and asked if they restore them. They do, along with other stuff for mopars. Check them out, Kim is a great person and prices are reasonable.  Anyway, she mentioned how Chip Foose contacted her about some things and I simply made a joke about having my car done on a show and how cool it would be because nobody has ever done a Daytona, and chances are never will.  Next day I was on the phone with Mark Worman.  It took me a week to decide, but we figured it out and made a deal.  My car was packed up and waiting for the shipper within three days,  It arrived in Oregon today.  He's going to start on it in July.  I was going to use a local place who does awesome work, but what tipped the scales is that Mark knows Mopars.  Right now we have agreed to him doing a weather tight shell.  Sorry, that's all I can afford right now.  If I was a neurosurgeon, sure, but I'm a shop teacher on a budget.  Unfortunately, I'm sure some will have some comment about not being able to do the whole thing in one shot.  Anyway, what Mark and now some magazines (Mopar Action and MCG) are finding interesting about the story is that when I was 7 yrs. old, I had my dad make me a pinewood derby car with a wing – and it was purple!  Alot of other things in the works and I'll keep you posted as they unfold! Anyway I still have the pinewood derby car today, hopefully the pics came thru.  Then the next twist is that the car I bought, was the December 2010 Calendar car for Cars-in-Barns.  Here I am now at 48 FINALLY realizing my dream.  I NEVER give up.  So if anybody has some stuff to sell or leads where I can get some stuff, let me know.  I talked with Galen and the only owner I haven't been able to track down that I know of is a Murray Crowe.  Anybody Know of him? [If anybody has or can find my motor, THAT would be awesome and I'd give you some kind of finders fee if needed.  I know chances are slim.  If not perhaps a date coded HP.  My build date was 6-2.  It would be nice to find original Z-braces, even if they are beat up, to replace mine, but I know that's probably impossible.  Anyway, any help would be appreciated.  You guys are A LOT more knowledgeable about these cars than I am and I do enjoy learning from you guys.  By the way Daytonalo, your stainless is going to be installed on the show!  Lol  Looking forward to hearing anything helpful.

Congrats on getting the resto started on TV!!  Look forward to seeing it.  Keep us posted

Thanks for the interest.  Season 1 is suppose to be coming out this fall I believe Mark said on Discovery HD/Velocity.  Not sure when season 2 is coming out. Since he said my car would take 6-8 months to do, I would imagine season 2 being spring/early summer next year. MCG mentioned doing two stories about this, one with Mark and his crew posing around the car and putting that on the cover of MCG.  THAT's something I never thought could happen. Accurate Exhaust is apparently doing an exhaust system for the car in exchange for some promotion.  Just wish I had a motor to hook it up to.  Still have some calls in to other places. There has been some pretty decent interest by some companies to be a part of this and they'd get some good exposure.

What parts are you missing?

r4daytona

The shop is called Welby's Car Care in Springfield Oregon. I have to fly up there in the next few weeks so they can film/interview me while the car is the way it is to start the story off.  If anybody close by up there wants to help me get from the airport to the shop and back the next day I'll buy ya lunch and dinner!  You'd get to see the car in it's rough state--and it's rough.  Maybe they'd even get you on the first episode. lol  As far as parts go, where do I start!  First and formost is trying to find a motor that coincides with a 6/2 build date.  I'd love to get some original Z-braces. The ones I have were actually made by musclecarfinders. They seem pretty decent and I'm going to try and use them if I can because I can use that money for something else.  If they don't fit that well, then I'll buy some new ones.  Anybody have suggestions who to get z braces from that won't break the bank? Legendary is talking about doing an install on the show, but nothing confirmed yet. I would need a nice condition shifter. I know there's a million of those, but if someone has a decent one I'd talk. Also need a horn button, that little L-shaped chrome trim piece that goes on the back of the quarter a correct radiator and lots of other stuff.  Open for suggestions.

Hello R4, regarding Murry Crowe, I bought a 69 Coronet R/T from him back in 1984 (which I still own). Met him at the Nationals at Indy. IIRC, he was a cotton farmer out of Vicksberg, MI. He had an enviable collection of Mopars back then including a Daytona (yours?), a Bird (white), AAR, Hemi 70 GTX (yellow) and Hemi 70 RR (lite green met.), that someone on Moparts now owns. Hope that helps? All the best with your car! Thinking about it, I may have a picture of it when Murry owned it... I will try and dig it out and post it.

Sounds pretty cool..............  Hope you're happy with the outcome.. I remember once there was a show like this and the owners wasn't too particularly happy with the outcome. Sounds like you have some input?

Soooo let me ask a silly question.  You have to pay Mark to do it?  What do you get out of this by letting them use your car?  Besides your car on the show etc...
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Well just got back from a short trip and see the updates.  Thanks guys. Stuart, didn't know they already decided on October for MCG. I'll be talking to Mark tomorrow to see any updates. I'm waiting on a few more sponsors and keeping my fingers crossed!  As far as Mark doing a wing car.. he did have a superbird he did for himself which I realize is different than a Daytona, but I will probably be acquiring Dave Patiks assistance when needed. I'm not really worried about Mark doing a bad job especially since alot (not all) of the mopar community will be watching.  I actually think because of the pressure, he's going to to a tremendous job.   TiMopar -- thanks for the picture, the only way I can know if that was my car is to call him with the VIN number.  It would be cool if that was it!  Thanks for the interest and I'll keep you posted.

r4daytona

It was late when i looked at the photo, but upon further inspection, I don't believe that is the car. Mine is came with a white interior.  If you have his number, I'd still like to talk to him.  Perhaps he had two?

69_500

So do you think it was this car? Just curious.

Holy crap!  Yes that is the car.  The DODGE on the wing gives it away.  If you have any other info ie: who what where and when etc, etc,  please let me know.  PM me if you like.  awesome

I went and looked at that car about 4 years ago. When he first opened up the door I was thinking there was a chance that it was one of my dad's old cars. But as it turned out it wasn't. Not a horrible car, but it was right after I had bought the 500, and there was no way I could talk my wife into 2 cars in a span of 8 weeks or so.

Read that old post. Very interesting about someone trying to steal the rims and having the tire fall off which caused the qtr. panel damage.

I was told by Mike from legendary that the October MCG with my car is on newsstands.  Sometimes its hard to find that around here so if anybody has it, let me know how it sounds. I didn't write the story so don't go tearing me a new one if something is incorrect. LOL  Dane, looking forward to talking and meeting with you out there.

Daytona Guy

Just got back from seeing Tom and his beautiful girl freind in Stpingfeild ORIGUN (for those who don't know how to say Oregon), where I got to see Tom's Daytona before they work their magic. Tom is a gem of a man, a first class guy. Did I say how prity his girl friend was was :) ? We had a lot of fun with the guys (Mark Wormam) from Graveyard Carz Discovery network. I saw the work that they have done on other cars, Tom chose wisely.  These guys are fun to be around, down to earth, and knowledgable. This is going to be a fun wait - to see how the program turns out.

Tom, thank you for letting me be a part of your experience- it was an honor. Sorry I had to bug out on dinner, I really needed to get back home.

Dane

r4daytona

Thanks for the kind words Dane, wish we could have had dinner. Your car is even better in person and Mark was quite impressed. I have to say it did look bad ass in my mirror. I think Mark is one of a handful of guys that knows mopars inside and out, but humble enough to know where to ask if he's unsure.  he was VERY impressed that you make those wings and even mentioned it in the interviews/comments and may be put on the show.  I have to say that I am very pleased that NAPA has basically donated an entire front suspension rebuild and most of the braking system.  He said he may be done with the "weathertight shell" as soon as January and wants us to come back up then.  Dane, maybe we can do dinner at that time.  I do need your address to mail you a little thank you.  To everyone out there though, I am looking for a correct alternator for may car with a 6-2 build date and Mark is looking for an alternator for a 71 charger -- that would have a 70 on the outer case and a stamping around june, july or august.   Anybody got one??
Thanks  Tom

r4daytona

Here's an offer and some questions. I have also found a place up here that has HUNDREDS of old roundback alternators. Lots of them from 68 thru 71. Been looking thru them for correct date for my car. My car was built june 2nd (about the 21st week of june) I found one stamped the 5th week of june.  Think this would work or is it still a bit to early for the date of the car?  AND here's a offer that could get me in trouble, if anybody would like me to look for a alternator for them I can -- and wont require a finders fee. I did find an alternator with a stamping of 66 with the mounting plate and tensioning/adjustment plate. Well, I'm not sure on the progress of the car basically because i haven't asked. I kind of want to be surprised, but I will ask Mark if he can post some photos sometime.  Couple of questions if you guys could answer them. I may be selling the following items when the car is done: a nice, restorable drivers side headlight door and (sorry I don't know the name) that curved metal piece that goes on the underside front of the decklid that caps off the cut part of the decklid. I thought my original decklid was history so I bought a nice charger lid to make a new one for the daytona. My car came with that other piece, but Mark wants to keep the original lid with the car so he is going to take my original apart and restore it, therefore I may be selling that extra piece I have. Any ideas on value?

Thanks, even though the car wasn't done that was the only time I could get my daughters up there before college started.  They had a great time and lots of laughs with Mark.  That was my girlfriend with my kids not my fiance`.  He did that just to bust my balls.  I did have a funny shot referring to Mark that GYC stands for "Geez Your Cheap".  The guys thought it was great, but must have been not enough time to fit it in.  Oh well, I have a blast when I'm over there.
I know people want to see some pics of my car, but I kind of have it apart right now.  Why you ask?....  Well as I mentioned at some point, I took my car back with a bunch of little things that I could do, and would have fun doing.  So I had a local guy come, peel back a little headliner and we got the chrome charger emblems on.  Since the rear seats were out, I decided to get some rear speakers and install them. I know the car didn't come with them, but i wanted them and it's ALOT easier to install from inside rather than the trunk.  Retro Radio did my radio conversion so I should have speakers in a couple days.  Since it was that far, I took the console out since Mark and Tony D'agostino sent me a new console. I got new a new wood grain kit from Dave Patik and I also got an almost NOS steering wheel fropm Tony as well. Mark put one on that was great, but this was better.  My front wheel mouldings were sent to florida to be stretched like they should be.

I have an Indoor show Feb 28 -Mar.2 which I am trying to get ready for, on top of that my friend had his baseboard heat burst in 6 spots and flooded the whole first floor.  I have to remodel the whole house, Kitchen, bathroom, drywall and flooring in about 3 weeks.  So I don't even have time to think.  I will get pictures when I can.

Looks like you had fun out there. I spent 8 days with the guys also. Had a blast. Dinner with daren and josh almost every night. I think my plum crazy challenger gets disassembled on next weeks episode. Not really supposed to be on till season 4. Holly is leaning on my car in the intro and they used my car for the end when it fades into the fully restored plum crazy challenger. I saw your car while I was out there. Looked great. Enjoy

Ok, this is a Daytona that Murry Crowe owned back in 83/84. Same car? Oh, the AAR was red, my mistake.

Hey, that's my runner in that picture!  I bought it from a good friend in Ohio. My friend in Ohio is very good friends with Murry. If you still need to get in touch with him let me know.

I bought a 69 Coronet R/T from Murry at the 84 Nats in Indy, which I still have. He had some really nice cars.

That must be one good looking big toe he's talking about.
The Partridge Family Daytona .. hummm .....  the bus paint scheme would give it that retro look, you'd know who it was at the car shows for sure.  Of course it would be a little lame pulling in with "come on get happy" blaring for the radio.

As far as Murray Crowe, I would love to talk to him about the car.  I will send you my number and he can call me, or if he wants, get me his number and I'll call him.

Garth, your car is going to be really nice when it's done.  If I remember, thats a 440-6 ??  I always liked the plum crazy. My first real muscle car was a 71 satellite with a bored out 383, tunnel ram, 430 gears and plum crazy with white pearl stripes down the sides.  The purple was a great color.

So did they tell you about the incident with the car coming off the jack and bending the nose or did they leave that for a surprise in the show as they were mentioning?

I was wondering the same thing. Man that would be my luck.

They didn't say a thing even when I was there this summer.  I saw the little preview clips and thought it dropped pretty low.  I saw that episode and got my answer.  I wasn't mad since it wasn't that bad and accidents happen.  They fixed it - all is good.

billssuperbird

I hear about it at work. Hope to see you this summer.

Tom,
The car looks great and I've enjoyed watching it evolve on the show, and on Facebook.  I just wanted to let you know that your car is not the same car the Murray Crowe owned.  I believe that his car was sold new here in Jackson, MS.  When Murray owned it, he lived in Vicksburg, MS and then moved across the river to Louisiana.  The man who purchased the car from Murray still owns it today and he lives about 5 miles from me.  With the exception of wheels and tires, it is still exactly how Murray had it.  Actually, the car is Hemi Orange.
