So i've put a little more work into my charger.  Got it painted up with some cheap spray paint to try to stop the rust.  New plugs, wires and points along with a rebuilt carburetor.

As you can see from the video, it turns over but I don't think its spinning fast enough.  My guess is a bad voltage regulator?  Any ideas?

Not bad though, in my opinion, for a car that hasn't been started over 20 years... with maybe 8 man hours and less than $150 invested.

Why do you think its the voltage regulator? was it running but not charging?.You need it fully charge the battery to turn the engine faster. Did you pour a little gas down the carb. to see if it would start. Do you have good spark? just a couple of things to check.
hope it helps

Cheers

terrible one

Great to hear from you again, nice to see you are still making progress.  :2thumbs: I for one am ready to see this thing driving around the yard! Start with a fully charged battery and if it still turns slow the problem is resistance and is most likely likely corrosion on the cables/ at the connection to the starter or the negative battery cable/ ground connection.

Great video  :popcrn: But I think the battery needs a charge.

Yep that battery needs to be charged as the engine is not cranking over fast enough.

I agree with blacknblack, a little bit of gas in carb will fire if you have good spark.  I just got my engine started for the first time this morning that way. It wasn't cranking much faster than yours looked in the video because I have a smaller/cheap battery in there for now. So I do think a better battery will help too.

I have tried to get it to start a couple times, pumping the throttle while its turning over.  I never filled the carb with gas though, the line was primed and it was squirting gas into the intake so I figured it'd be alright.  Haven't checked for spark yet but its the next thing on the list.

I thought it had a voltage regulator problem because I'm having to use a remote ignition hooked directly to the starter, bypassing the little voltage box on the firewall (cant think of the name for it).  I was just thinking that it sounded like it wasn't spinning fast enough to actually start, like the starter was going out or something.

The batter is out of the white truck sitting in the yard in the video.  I was driving it yesterday and the battery seemed to be fine so I dont think thats the problem?  The cable ends in the charger are pretty bad though.  Maybe it just doesn't have a really good connection there.

From what ya'll are saying, sounds to me like I should be able to start it up and drive it down the driveway fairly easily.  It's kind of a really big deal for me to see all this life coming into it.  For as long as I can remember it's been sitting parked in our backyard and now it's on the verge of being driven around?!  Just kind of a crazy experience for me.
