73 Charger Fender mounting

I'm mounting my newly trimmed out fenders for the very first time and have some questions.

There is a bracket that connects above the front hinge that goes up under the top back edge of the fender. It has a square hole in if and sorta looks like there is supposed to be some kind of a bushing or something. What hoes there?

Also,, the top rear bolt on the fender has the same odd square hole. I didnt take these off and as a matter of fact the fenders are from different cars. Anybody have any ideas or perhaps an image of the fender mounting?

Yes, you slide shims in those locations as needed to align the fenders with the doors, etc. What you are seeing is normal. If you don't have the factory U-shaped shims, big washers can do the same thing.

Hello, one problem I am having at least on one side is the fender is not lowering enough on the back end (with no shims) I lowered the bracket that is above the hinge all the way and the on that bolts to the top pf the firewall is bottomed out. Looks to me like the front end of the fender has to come up. were they shimmed in the front too if needed?

These cars are old and have been racked about, plus build tolerances were probably not as good back then. There is a little variation is every car. I just set fenders and aligned them on a 73 and ended up mashing down the rear tabs a bit you are talking about with a hammer to get correct alignment.

I don't recall ever pulling shims out of the front before, but it's possible. you definitely don't want to do one side only (hood alignment), and don't shim too much as it will start putting bolt holes to the radiator core and things out of alignment.

Don't forget to put seam sealer between the fender and the inner fender (at the top) when you get it all aligned. It keeps the grit from the fenderwell out of the engine bay.
