I just completed rebuilding and aligning the front end on my '68, less the steering box.  Thought the steering reaction would be much tighter/better.  It's not.  Still wants to wander.  I also hear and feel a "knock" in the steering column/wheel when turning slowly to the right from a stop.  Would appreciate anybody sharing their knowledge and/or experience relative to this issue.  Thanks! :shruggy:

The box is usually the biggest contributor to this problem. I've seen play in some boxes up to 10* of rotation. That could easily translate into several inches at the steering wheel. There is a method of tightening up the box some. I forget the exact sequence since its been many, many years since I've done it. Perhaps other will chime in with the procedure.

The knock may be in the column or it could be elsewhere. There isn't much in the column that could knock. Maybe the turn signal switch. There is the possibility if the coupler is close to some components that it could knock on things since it is not completely roung. I'd suggest checking the grease zerks on the idler and tie rod ends. Sometimes these stick up just enough to tag the t-bar as they go by.

I had a knock that I couldn't find for ages on my '69.
Turned out the steering box mounting bolts were loose and we only discovered that by mistake when the car was on a hoist.
Gotta love a '69
