I'm shopping around paint shops for my 68 Charger and would like opinions on an appropriate cost?  All major body work done, just fine tune blocking, paint, and buff.  The stripe will be painted.  Also if anyone has a recommendation for a shop in the Houston vicinity I'd appreciate your input.  Many thanks.

Hey Buddy,

Congrats on being so close to paint, its exciting isn't it! You can't go wrong with PPG IMO and a budget of $1000+ for paint et al would be my minimum guess.  :Twocents:

:iagree: You need to specify what type of paint, brand, budget, etc. I painted mine in SS urethane using OMNI (which I wouldn't recommend, OMNI is thin as water) I spent less than $300 on paint/hardener/reducer.

Im getting ready to paint mine and got a quote from NAPA (deals with Martin Seymour Paints) they quoted $500. That includes Hemi Orange V2, plus clear coat, plus 2k primer, reducer, etc. For $500 I thought it was pretty good.

Sherwin Williams quoted $450 for only the paint in their brand. It would have been $900 for everything from SW. I've head PPG is pretty good as well.

IMO a $500 for a paint job will..well look like a $500 paint job.

Id say, its going to cost you 3k+ depending on what you want, between finishing work, prep, paint, wetsanding/compounding

Will be PPG base and clear.  AA1 Silver, with the stripe painted black.  I'm looking more for a shop quote, not just materials as I will not be painting the car myself.  Thanks for the responses . . .

My advise is to find others recommendations, like your doing, and not cut corners or get in a hurry. Take your budget and time frame and start checking around, let shops know you want to monitor progress and pay accordingly. Check with B.B.B. and online for any complaints and do a records search at the court house for trouble. My opinion may sound extreme but the total horror story's I've seen and heard from others have me shocked.  :scratchchin:

Really depends on the painter, I have seen 5k pieces of you know what and my 74 Duster came out great ( Maaco special $199), paint still looked good after 2 yrs when I sold the car.
But for the most part, you are right.
I am spending almost $4k on my vette and that is with me taking off all the parts that need to come off.
And if you are changing colors, that will cost you more.

I got a similar quote from NAPA for about $600 using Dupont Chromabase paint system to include BC/CC & primer.  However I disagree on your $500 dollar paintjob comment.  It may cost $3k if you take it somewhere to be painted, however,  (not trying to start a pissing match here) Calif240 said "I am getting ready to paint mine".  I plan on doing the same, doing my own paint work, but PPG is out of my price range at over $1000 in paint/clear needed to do the entire car.

If your doing all the work, your paint cost could range from $200 to $2000.  It all depends on what all you plan on painting and what brand your going with.  I got a quote for $8000 just for paint using Sherwin Williams paint from a local shop here in NC, body work/blocking would cost extra.  It took all the will power I could muster not to laugh in the guys face at the quote, and even more when I asked him what kind of paint and his claim that SW was good paint!

My advise is never use cheap paint.. you have hour after hour into it, and you're going to cover it up with that crap..? Save up a few weeks and get something good from PPG..  :Twocents:

Which one has a better finish and longevity, Single Stage or 2 Stage ?

Personally I've seen more clear coat issues then single stage problems, Single stage is easier to touch up and buff out but I don't think the finish is quite as nice as 2 stage...

Well put.. Why go that far to finish it like that??

A $500 paint job? Aside from Maaco , which I wouldn't bring my lawn mower to ( A buddy brought his Ram to them for paint, 9 months later it had completely flaked off. They don't know the meaning of the word PREP), that $$ won't buy you a ticket inside a paint booth.

I brought my Camaro to a friend's shop a few years back. It was taped off , primed, blocked and ready for paint. He painted, striped and cleared it for me for $1k. It looked like a million $$ when it was done.. And that was with me completely reassembling the car.
