Balancing multiple carbs

I don't have them and I don't know that I ever will, but I have long wondered about the proper procedure for balancing a multi carb setup.  Is it a secret art that racers are reluctant to share or just a forgotten mechanical methodology?  Is there a big difference between doing dual four versus something eight Strombergs?

I use the Uni-Syn carb tool to set up my dual quad carters on my 383....I also have the little single barrel one that I used on my old 4 carbed 65 Corvair with the 140hp engine

They work good...just set on top of the carb and the "float" will tell you if it's flowing the same as the others

So it's airflow in that you are trying to balance?
