So it's the rich guy who wants a pool for his kids' fault? :scratchchin: Blame the correct person, which is the contractor who is at 100% fault in this.  :Twocents:

Like my Uncle Augusto from the old country used to say in broken English whenever we would use a lever to do something, "you see Kimmie, Jesus Christ said 'give me a lever and I will lift the world'."  He never really understood that Jesus did not even need a lever.

At any rate, the inventor part of me is spinning www.safefridge.com that asks why not a sensor for all outriggers that triggers when they only have, I don't know, a 500 pound load, well before the rig topples?  Kim

Wow. I was packing sh1t when they lifted my pool over the house but people were saying "It'll never happen"
This clip just goes to show it can happen.
Gotta love a '69

I know cranes (id venture to say most if not all but someone who is in the field might know better) have safety sensor that will stop the boom from extending if the weight is too heavy....id venture to guess something went wrong with the sensor/computer.

The crane op over extended his boom, that combined with a marginal load and over it goes. Similar ax happened last year in Santa rosa, Ca. Couple had a large oak in the back yard that was dying. Crane was positioned like the one in the vid but in this case he was trying to lift a huge piece of the trunk. Cal OSHA says the op didn't realize the load was way heavier than he thought. He raised the load 12-14 feet when the load slipped just enough to ruin his day. Cut the house cleanly in half, no injuries but you should have read about the finger pointing.

twodko,

Shouldn't the cranes computer prevent this from happening? Assuming that its not the ground or stabilizers that are the problem and give out.

Are you serious????Of course it was  the crane operators fault. My writing "all for a freaking pool",was to be interperated as "trying to do something productive, turns into a disaster".

drifter69

Operator error for sure and he knows it!

Darkman

Incorrect counterweights (not enough) on the crane. At full reach it was enough to tip it over. The load was not too heavy for the crane or the reach.

Definitely operator error as they probably realised that they didn't have enough counterweights and thought it to be too expensive to wait for more and risked it. Time is money for cranes!

Although there was a loud "snap" before she went. Maybe the pins in the outrigger gave way causing a sudden load shift and tipped over
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

If you think Education is difficult, try being stupid!

HANDM

I was also thinking too much boom and too little counterweight......

Alright dude... :2thumbs:

But seriously, there can't be video of just the crash...where's the video of them bringing the crane down?  :o

Good morning Mr. Grad!

I would sure think so. Perhaps a combo of faulty sensors, insufficient counter weight, poor spatial awareness and def op error. Bad juju.
Hope you had great day yesterday and toasted your accomplishment. Later.

Old Moparz

Operator error or a mechanical malfunction, it seems like the boom was overextended & too horizontal to me. You lose all the lifting strength with that angle like holding a bowling ball with your arm straight out instead of by your side.

My friend that is the crane oper I spoke of makes dam good money, but look at the responsability behind it.It's funny because he is only 27,NTM looks very young, gets it alot when he drives up with the crane the customer, jobsite GC,etc, sometimes asks him when the operator is showing up,thinking he is just delivering it.When he says "I'm the operator" they sometimes look alittle "concerned".!!!!LOL
He told me a story that one time setting a huge slate chimmeney cap on a house down in Greenich, here in CT,million plus dollar home,he arrived started setting up,the woman owner comes out and asks the same thing "when is the guy that is going to operate the crane coming"?When he said he was,she asked "have you done this before?" He replied"NO",meaning he has never set a chim cap like that before, she took it as he never ran a crane and started gettting on the phone to the company, telling him to do not dare try to pick the cap up,etc.Turned into a funny situation, she appoligized, and all went well.
I told him,as she stood there watching the event,he should have started saying out loud" I think it's this lever, nope, let me try this one, nope, this one?????"LOL!!!!!
Being in construction,I do  the sheetmetal/ductwork for the HVAC systems in buildings, the jobs I'm ususally on are rather large commercial ones, schools, hospitals, casinos, etc,I am there from the errection of the steel to the finish work phase of the job,and have seen my share of accidents, some minor, some gruesome. One example, marking riser shafts out on the steel floor decking while steel beams are being still being hoisted over you for the higher floors, little nerve racking to say the least, but used to it at this point.Iron workers over you, sometimes dropping their lag bolts, you get hit with one of those, ouch!!!!!!Tremendous safety now working these sites, but accidents will happen regardless.
My company had a job,I was not there,my friend who was a foreman was there, the crane fell over killing six people,he was right in the area when it happened, and saw one of the killed, get decappitated. It screwed him up for awhile, and said it starts making you try and be aware more of your surroundings.
While this incident noone was hurt, thank God,who really cares about the house, it's just lumber, not a life!!!

I wonder if there is any factual info on exactly why this happened? I looked like a very, very long pick.
