cost to replace a roof 3,000

hi,everyone today i was quoted aprice to replace my roof with a doner roof.the work to include replacing rear speaker shelf,rear window channel the plenium and dutchman panel and lead the sail panels, sand and prime to complete for 3,000 ...oh and also weld in my floor pans. is this the normal amount .its been my only quote so far thx

$3000 to do all that?   I would highly suggest you look at the shop's work and see other "major" projects they have done.  That rear window filler panel alone is a ton of work to make fit right.  That seems rather cheap to me.  And you usually get what you pay for.  But not always though, so I'd suggest just checking out their other work.  That'll give you an indication as to what to expect on your car.  Good luck!

My location is in illinois,its a shop known for putting out nice cars.well if tou guys say its a great price for a lot of work then I'm in!:thx for the input. I for got to mention its for 68 charger thx guys

The question always has to be asked when someone talks about replacing a "roof" - are they talking about the roof SKIN?  Or chopping off the entire roof including the under-structure (opening up the car's cabin like a convertible), and replacing it all from a donor car as one huge chunk?  


When you ask this question the body man usually says "Well OF COURSE I meant doing it the ______ way, what did you think I meant?  It makes much more sense than doing it the other way."  But there are guys who swear by both methods, and both camps seem to treat their method as the "normal" way of doing it.

Yes but if it sounds too good to be true...

There are lots of stories around here about guys getting "good deals" on work that ended up costing them way more than if they had paid the top shelf guy to do it right the first time. Just check them out thoroughly before handing them $3k because I don't want to read another "I got screwed" thread.

The car's roof is several layers of sheemetal thick in places.  Cosmetically attaching a donor roof is not necessarily enough to make the car sound again. 


You can get a decent new replacement roof skin from AMD now.  I would do that before I would hack off the whole roof structure.

hi,the under structure is also shot (BAD) the car use to be a vinyl top and rusted dead centerof roof thru about the size of a laundry basket and also around the rear window channel completly around plenium is shot and dutchmen panel is bad.im not sure what road to take on fixing it ,but a skin is 600 with out installing. i had two different shops come look at it now and they both said i needed a new roof.some one off this site was cool and sold me a complete rust free roof,sail panels pillars under structure like i said all complete and rust free for 140.00 bucks from his doner car .not anyone can beat that deal! after all that was said im not sure if its the right thing to do,im just going with what the shops said thx for the input still open to find the best way

If I were you, I would take the skin off first to get a better idea on structural rust damage before deciding to whack off the whole roof with innards.

hi ,im not sure where to start,even if i get the skin off how can i tell if the structure is shot,imean at what degree do you say, oh thats still good and can be saved or if its just bad.i dont know im just starting out and olmost lost

Maybe you can find a Member near you that would come over and look at your car, and give you an idea of what you're up against...

Its not all that hard to tell...if you see surface rust (rust that you can blast/sand off) your generally fine, your real concern is cancerous rust. Thats the type that has already weakened metal, stuff with large pits or areas that go right through. But even that if localized can be pretty easy to fix.

i live in the quad cities,well its cancerous then because its eaten away in big spots all the inner structure is just how you described on the iner sail panels around the window and newly found spots...suck

Did the body shop doing the work look at your damaged roof (& rest of car) in person to determine what needs to be done? LEON.

Yes both body shops came to my house to look at it and they both said the same thing it was a resto and its turned into a salvage save I've already have new rear valance,and corners.rear trunk pan,one piece front floor pan,deck panel,rearwindow chanel,speaker shelf,plenium. Trunk extentions ,and it all still need to be welded in besides the roof

Agreed, don't let them hack the whole roof off. The car will never be straight again..

Yes I would agree but what do you do if the inner structure is also bad ?can it be saved ?I don't know.but what'd o you say to two seperate body shops that say the same thing .I'm still up in the air about it.was it the right thing to do I don't know iguess ill find out in the next couple of weeks when I get it back and I will post the pic and you guys can letme know what you think .
