Extended warranty price

We just bought a new Town&Country van and want to purchase an extended warranty. What would be a good price for this? There is haggle room, right?

My experience with the factory extended warranty is:
Yes, there is "haggle room". It's kinda like the old " and if you act now..." BS.
As for what a good price is, it will depend on what deductible you choose. I had an extended warranty with a $150 deductible that was pretty reasonable.

Bought my 04 ram used in 07,got the 10year /100k mile bumper to bumper for $1,400 something w/$100.00 deductable. When they first offered it to me,they wanted $1,900 something, told them no don't want it,then they came back with the counter of the $1,400.Hmmmmmmm?

If you already bought it I think you might not have much haggle room. Usually at the time when you are signing papers in the back room with the finance guy you can keep saying no to the extended warranty until he gets to the price you are looking for. When he finally lets you pass on it is probably his lowest price. Then offer him a few hundred less and see what he does. Dont worry about offending a car salesman, there not human. Extended warranties are not worth the paper they are written on..... I bought one from Chrysler one time, and never will again.  :Twocents:

Jason,
I have heard that before. My experience was with a Dakota I had. I needed a front axle and then a transmission replaced. Never had any hassles getting repairs made and it was well worth the $150 deductible. I think it may have more to do with the dealer/repairman than the warranty.

Most of what I read or hear about regarding extended warranties on anything, not just cars, are all bad. I saw my parents buy one for an appliance when I was a kid, & the one time they needed it, it worked. It basically paid for itself, but I doubt that happens much now. This was in the mid 70's & it seems these warranties have changed since then & not in favor of the consumer. Probably like a casino where the game is designed to never lose & always make a profit.

I've only purchased one extended warranty, & it was for a CD changer in the 80's. This was back when CD players were $300 & up. When I needed to use it, the store, along with the plan I bought, had gone out of business.

My wife bought undercoating with a lifetime warranty that very similar to an extended warranty plan when she bought her first new car in 1988. I also thought it was a good idea until it was time to bring the car into the dealer for it's undercoating inspection & reapplication. This was required to keep the lifetime warranty valid. The initial cost was $450 or so, & the price for each annual visit was going to be in the hundreds. She said forget it, let the car rot.

An extended warranty was offered, or rather pushed, for a used Ford F-150 I bought. They wanted $1700 for a one year warranty which I refused. Before they handed over the keys to the truck, they had dropped the price twice on the warranty, & finally down to $1100. Not too much profit, is there?  ::)  I said no over & over, during a 20 minute pitch of how terrible it would be to break down somewhere with an old, used, truck. I did say that if the truck was that bad I would know within the first 30 days & you'd be fixing it for free under the state's 30 day warranty law.

I never had to do a thing to the truck other than brakes & tires over the 5 or 6 years I kept it. Save your money, put it in the bank in case the vehicle breaks down so you'll have it to fix it.   :Twocents:

I have had good and bad experiences with them. I bought a 100,000 ext warranty for a 94 dodge and had the trany go at 110,000 miles. bought one for a Chevy and had a trany go at 60,000 it only cost me $100 for the $2500. repair. I will probably buy one next time.

Never buy from the dealer and get a factory extended warenty from the Manufacturer.

Better warenty and cheeper.

If you sell the car or trade it in before the warenty expires you will get the dif back for the time you did not use it.

buying from a major company (like Chrysler) is alot better than buying one from a mail advertisement, my in-laws got took on the mail deal twice, once on a car and another time on a home warrenty, by the time they needed the coverage the company had gone out of business
