A little project I am working on....( oil filter)

First, I have to give a huge thanks to Johntpr for helping me out with info on this.  This was just a first try and obviously when you see the pics, some refining needs to be done.  But all in all, not bad for a first run.  If I can get the shade of the color right and get an issue resolved with the decal, it should be dead on.

I know the color is off.  The cap on the rattle can looked dead on but after I sprayed it out, it looked more like a flat army green than the yellowish green color on the cap.

It does look good so far, Brian.  Hopefully you can get the color & decal issues worked out.

A related question for you - should those be oversprayed with engine color or not?  I've always thought so, but am now hearing that's probably not the case.

Yes they are textured and the pic is not good enough to show the texture.  It might not be as coarse as the original but it DOES have texturing on it!  

As for the engine over spray..... I am not 100% certain as the only ones I have seen have been NOS or on the show engines or assembly line pics which is too far away to tell if there is over spray or not.  I have heard that there was some kind of a cover that went over it but as to how far that cover went onto the filter, I do not know.

wow, actually just looked at the pics and the color looks more grayish than green.  The actual color is more like a dark army green than what you see.  Saturday I should have more insight as to how I can match the color better.

Wow, looks factory fresh!! What filter did you use originally and where did you get the decal from?

decal I made up with stuff from Staples however, the clear didn't turn out to be "crystal clear".  I actually found something that I missed making up also so that will be on the next one that I do.

As for the filter, I just used a Purolator that I had laying around.  Height is a little short and the knurled part is not as long as the originals.

So how about the raised "M" on top?

I do the same thing with the red/white/blue Mopar repro filters...take a WIX, paint it white, add the red & blue stripes & put clear decals I made on the PC for the lettering.

Was doing this even when those filters were available....since they have been disco'd the prices are out of control!

The raised "M" is accomplished using a thin piece of aluminum or steel.  I can't remember which it is off the top of my head.  Kinda leaning towards aluminum.  The "M" is traced out onto the metal and then cut out by hand.  Can we say major pain in the butt?  But it is well worth it if the end result is as good as I am hoping.

I bought the last remaining batch from Monicatti Dodge. They were the last they had in stock. Went for broke & bought about a dozen of them to have on hand for the future. Kinda sucks. Such a universally needed part now disco'd.

Like I said, I can not take full credit for this.  John, did the one a while ago and he was a big part of helping me with what he used.  I am just refining and tweaking it to get more dead on like it was from the factory.  Without Johns help, I probably would still be scratching my head as to how to get the textured part on the filter.  When I get this perfected, John will be having one for his car on the house.

There was talk that those green ones were going to be repopped but maybe not now? I was also wondering about the overspray/paint on assembly line engine filters...makes sense that they would be painted...much like the spark plugs, battery cable, etc".

I think I have the color pretty much down.  I have a clear sand grit texture to go over the filter once the decals are applied.  Just awaiting on the decals right now.  If all goes well, I should have the filters on our cars for the NCPC show in PA in a couple weeks.
