Vapor lock?

I have a mild build 440 in my 68 and since it has gotten so warm the car does not want to start easily after I have driven it for a while and try to restart the car. I have headers, Eddy performer rpm intake double pumper Holley new fuel pump and hard lines from the fuel pump up to the carb. The car will start and then die when trying to start after driving it for 20 miles or so. If I try again it just spins over like it has no fuel. I don't pump it because that seems to make it worse, so I floor it and after several seconds it fires right up. Not a lot of black smoke like it is flooded either?
I thought it may be a good idea to put the stock 440 fuel line set up in the car with the return line back to the tank to catch fuel vapor etc. The car was originally a 383 H code car.

Thanks for the help,

Lawrence

Do you have the fel-pro 1215 valley pan installed (blocks the exhaust crossover) ? phenolic spacer between the carb and intake?

I installed the fel pro pan and 1/2 spacer like Ron suggested here: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,52284.0.html

No more vapor lock. :2thumbs:
Max rim size:15"

Thanks piston Freddy for the scoop. I don't recall if I put that type of valley pan on or not. I will have to check it out. As for the spacer, I have an Eddy RPM intake which does not allow for much room under the hood as is. I will check and see if I can get more room under the hood.

I know about the clearance issue! I have a 440 with torker 2 intake, eddy carb and when it had the finned black mopar air cleaner on - it touched the hood.So I got the chrome one with dropped base and now 1/2 spacer fits and hood will clear fine, will get even more room with Holley carb I bought(I can loose the plastic spacer that was necessary to clear the eddy carb).

What kind a air cleaner are you running and how tall is the air filter?

There are also a thinner spacers available than 1/2  and do not get a air cleaner that's lower than 3"

Lawrence, here are the parts you need :

This base gasket is thinner than the phenolic spacer and should provide adequate hood clearance.

I have a drop base with the chrome air cleaner and a Holley carb. The top of my air cleaner touches the hood insulation. I don't hink I can run a spacer because of clearance issues. I may not have the most aggressive drop base on the market? Should I have more clearance you think?
