Breakerless distributor

Alright among my wiring woes Ive discovered that when my builder rebuilt my engine he installed a Accel 71000 series breakerless distributor. after reading up it looks like it has its own built in ignition module.

Does this mean I no longer need the MOPAR Orange Box ECU thats still installed on my firewall?

Would the Orange box be better performance wise?

Yeah I read that PDF already but Im still confused why my engine guy left the old ignition module on the wall all hooked into the wire harness. I mean all this time I thought That I was running the Orange box ignition while in actuality ive been running off a stand alone system built into the distributor.

Owell looks like im off to the parts store to buy a replacement ignition module for the distributor..Im about 99% sure thats what the issue is now.

if coil is hooked to - lead of the dist with the green wire dist, the ECU won't affect on anything since the spark order is not being given by the ECU. It can be connected just by ornament or stock look

You must have hanging around ( or cut and hidden down the tape ) the black traced yellow wire what runs from ECU to - lead of the coil.

ALSO the gray and brown wires what originally links the original dist with ECU to gives the trigger to the ECU

I thought the accel units used a GM module in place of the mopar orange box.So the orange mopar firewall box maybe just there for a back up

Yeah the brown and grey wires are just hanging near the Ballast resistor..I was always like WTF are thes wire even for. As for the wire that leads to the coil im sure its taped up somewhere. Im ordering a new harness but in the meantime im going to replace the module in the distributor...prolly will fire right up...hopefully.

I still need to figure out why it fried though so history dosn't repeat. as for the orange box..Ill throw it in the trunk as a back up if the ECU in the distibutor blows again in the future.

thanks guys

you can't use that distributor with Mopar ECU, at least not without some mods... you can use some others distributors with similar than stock assemblies ( just the magnetick pick up inside and two wires leaving the dist ), but not ready to run dist with built in ignition systems

I guess those wires hanging around are still with the rubber plug male/female bullet terminals, right ?

Sorry wires are not brown and gray, are black and gray ( dunno what I was thinking when I said brown )

Thanks Nacho. Ill just throw it with the rest of the extra parts in my trunk. Man it will be nice knowing I can remove alot of the eye sore wiring thats just cluttering everything up near the firewall . Should be a clean look after im done, too bad if I get a new Engine harness that ill be paying for the ECU wiring I won't need.

you can make your own wiring. You are in the States, and parts are available around... wires, terminals and plugs. No need to be an expert just patiente.

If I can make it being overseas where I have to recicle parts, you'll be able too with new parts.

everything depends on which assembly you actually wants to keep. Nothing wrong with a new engine harness though. Just a jumper wire between ballast terminals to make it work on accel system and the rest of plugs can be hanging around or hidden down tape. Then you can get a Mopar ignition system ( or FBO ) and still use the new harness.

the new FBO multispark systems use stock plugs too, just ballast don't but will remain a jumper wire ( or an internally modified ballast, removing resistor and replacing with a wire ) to keep stock look outside
