Just would like some input clarification from a bunch of guys who know a hell of alot more than I do about my 69 charger.  I purchased new year one hp manifolds for my 440 4 years ago right before I put the car in the body shop.  I recall seeing a small return spring laying around one day when I was checking on the progress, forgot to grab it, but I thought at the time it went to the heat riser because the counter balance had fallen off.  Iam now not sure if it went to the car or not.  The back side of the manifold still has the a spring as well as a return spring, and seems to be functioning properly, meaning it stays shut and can only open it by twisting the shaft by hand.  but now sure if that is all it should have or if the counter balance just bolts back on or has a return spring of itself somehow????? If so does it just bolt back on the keyed shaft or does the spring from the back side need compressed???? :shruggy:  Any help on more of my dumb questions would be appreciated.

any ideas?  I was assuming the counterbalance would rotate as the car warms up, but it doesnt..any input?  thanks

there is a bi metalic coiled spring that when it gets hot opens the flap , & there is a tiny spring that helps shut it when cold  , the spring looks similar to a distributor advance weight

All redone 1969 440 , and it works

The wound spring shuts the butterfly, exhaust pressure opens the butterfly against decreasing pressure as the spring heats up...the counterweight has a stop pin to limit the butterfly's open travel.

The small coil spring merely keeps the butterfly shaft from rattling in its bore.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

thanks for the correction John     sorry for any confusion :yesnod:

seem to remember the yearone repops slightly different to that though , & being able to hook the spring the other way round to keep the  flap open  :scratchchin:  course can't go & look at mine to check  , because i have removed the whole set up now since switching to a manual choke thunder AVS :scratchchin:

i could be getting mixed up with something else though would not be the first time  :slap:
