1996 2500 4x4 check engine light question

I have a 1996 2500 4x4 dodge ram and the check engine light will not go out. I have had it diagnosed at a reputable shop. We have changed some parts but it seems that the signal from the crankshaft is intermittant, and sets off the light. The mechanic says either the ECM computer is bad, but looks like somebody already replaced it, or the wiring harness is bad. This truck has the 5.9 Magnum. I just bought a 1995 1500 4x4 with the 5.9 magnum, and I was wondering if the ecm computer mighht be compatible with my 96, or if the wiring harness would be the same, or any other input with this engine light problem! Thanks!

On my truck, 04, the computer said it was the egr valve. The mech said 9 out of 10 times it was the egr valve. Just sayin.

sometimes it is the gas cap and the emission cannister under the bed

1996 should be the first of the OBD II..1995 isn't....Plus, the ECM is VIN specific...You cannot just swap 'em around like the old days..


My advice? Drive it if it isn't leaving you stranded, or sell it....2500 series trucks were ridden hard and put up wet most times...[READ: redneck wannabees out stump jumpin' and get muddy water in places you can't get it out of like wiring connectors]....

Whats the fault code?

If it's for the crank sensor, are you using aftermkt parts ?

I've been down the road of intermittant returning faults only to finally replace them with factory parts and it's gone for good, been there way to many times to trust any aftermkt parts UNLESS thats all I can get.
