hi
my problem is that my pedal won't return on my 69 charger
the brakes work and i feel that I have power assistance too.

These are the reasons I can think of:

1. brake pedal pivot and bell crank not lubricated enough.
2. bendix diaghram return spring worn out.
3. clogging in master cylinder or piston cups in master cylinder worn.
4. check valve not working properly.

What is the cause of this cursed brake system og mine?
What should I do, where would you start. anybody have an idea on this, And I would really appreciate it.
thanks

first I bled the brakes, hoping it was an easy fix, but it didnt help.
then I freed up the pivor with WD40 and freed the bell crank(dogleg) auntil it all worked smoothly there, but still the problem remained the same, pedal won't return.
What do I do next?

Did you check the vacuum line at the brake booster for any holes?

mysil bergsprekken

the vacuum line seemed to be ok, not sure about the check calve though. How do i check the "check valve"?

There probably isn't any way of checking the "check valve" is there?

Correct me if I am wrong but its general purpose is to open for air in the front chamber in the booster, and then not letting in any air back into it since that should come via the rear chamber???    If that made sense.

The vacuum check valve should not cause a petal return problem. If the valve dose not seal, the power assist would not work any time the vacuum in the intake is low (hard acceleration, engine off)  Example: your at the drag strip , you give the Mustang next to you a head start, to be fair. Just as you are about to pass him at the 1/8 mile point, his engine blows and he swerves into your lane. You hit the brakes and for a second until the vacuum builds back up in the booster you only have manual brakes. If the check valve had been working the boostert would have store the highest vacuum you had before you floored it ,good for one or two brake applications

Did you get the car that way? Did you rebuild/change anything in the brake system?

This happened after the car had been sitting for two months. I have not changed or rebuildt anythiong on the brake system. It is all stock with drums all ariund.
One thing though. When I take my foot on the back of the brake pedal and pull it towards me, it sometimes releases the brakes. But I really have to pull it towards me. This is not safe to drive with obvioulsly.

Brake fluid absorbs water and can rust mastercylinders and wheel cylinders. Maybe the MC is sticking. Remove it and clamp in a vise and pump the MC with a dowel rod. If you have an old set of bleeder hoses you can recycle the fluid back to the reservoir. The MC should return smoothly when released.

Long ago in the other 69, the brake pivot bushing was missing and from there the bolt would pinch the pivot point and I woud have to manually lift the brake pedal.....That problem was so ingrained into my wifes driving of the Charger she STILL thinks she needs to lift the pedal....LOL

On a Midland/Ross booster I had ,it had years of crap built up around the pushrod by the plastic piece. You didn't have to pull it back but it took it's sweet time coming back up.

Loosen the master cylinder from the booster / firewall. any improvement?

ck the back of the master cylinder piston to see if it's all the way back against the retainer, if it is  push the piston in slightly and see if it returns smoothly and quickly. If Ok, procede

remove the booster if equipped and perform the same test, If Ok, procede

if all the above or are Ok,  ck for binding in the pedal linkages  or stop light switch

Am I correct in assuming there isn't a return spring on the 69 power brake pedal? I am having a similar problem. My pedal makes a clunking sound when I force it to return all the way. Its binding in the pivot area. I will address that this weekend.
