Have any of you Aussie guys imported a charger into NSW? What is required to get the car road legal? I know someone in NZ looking to head over with a 69 Charger. The car has been in NZ for over 3 years, shipped from USA. Cheers.

I believe you need an import approval before the car ships. Luckily NSW is somewhat lenient on LHD vehicles and modifications. I would double check with the RTA regarding LHD and what is allowed before you purchase, or your friend brings it across . You'll also be charged duty on the value of the vehicle, unless you can prove you've owned it for a certain amount of time and one of the conditions is that you can't sell it for a year.

I bought my Charger from NSW because it was already here and registered, but looking back I probably should have imported one myself. It was legally registered on full registration and had a fair amount of modifications.

Good luck  :2thumbs:

I sold my 68 to a member on here G-man and he had it shipped over.  You might try to contact him.  Good luck!

Thanks guys. It would suck having to pay GST again on something that you already own just because you're bringing it to another country. Let me know what you find out 440.  :2thumbs:

I don't think it matters what state you import into, you will still need import approvals BEFORE you ship the car. If you import without one you run the risk of having the car confiscated and crushed or made to send the car back at your cost.

Check the government websites there may be some exclusions with dealing with NZ (not sure).

If the car is owned by the person who is moving to Aus, there also may be other exclusions as they are not buying to import, but moving an already owned Charger

This was taken from the "Importing Vehicles to Australia Brochure:

Example 4
The applicant is a New Zealand citizen who intends to settle permanently in Australia.  The applicant is not travelling to Australia for holiday or tourist purposes.  Rather, the applicant has arranged employment within Australia (and amongst other matters has obtained an Australian Tax File Number, has established an Australian bank account, has registered with Medicare and has applied for an Australian driver's licence).  The applicant has also arranged residential property in Australia and is shipping his household goods to Australia.  Under the Trans Tasman Travel Arrangement, there is a free flow of people between Australia and New Zealand.  Upon arrival in Australia, New Zealand citizens are considered to have applied for a visa and, subject to health and character considerations, automatically receive a Special Category Visa.  The applicant purchased a car 18 months ago in New Zealand; the car was garaged at the applicant's New Zealand residence and was registered for use in New Zealand for the entire 18 months.  The applicant has not imported a car previously.  The applicant qualifies under the Personal Imports Scheme to import the car into Australia.

I can't find anywhere about paying GST on importing a car from NZ to Aus if you already own it, but if you call the above contact, I'm sure they can advise you better

We had a 69 R/T SE that was sold to someone in Australia, orange with a black R/T stripe. I know it took a while, we sold him the car in October and he didn't see it until February-March

Thanks Darkman. I called up, and the Govt want 10% of the original purchase price, even though the owner has owned the car for 3 years. Duty is not payable because vehicle is over 30 years old.  :2thumbs:
