Know What You Own If Your Garage Burned Down?

Aside from a pile of ashes & twisted metal.

I read about it earlier on the Garage Journal site, but wanted to post about it here as a reminder to everyone.

The guy on that forum is in the middle of an insurance claim & having a big headache. Fortunately there were no injuries, just tools & equipment were lost. It's easy to take for granted what we have accumulated over a lifetime & not think too much about ever having to replace it until you have to replace it. I have insurance on my stuff & my cars, but what do I have exactly? I talked to my wife recently after updating some insurance coverage on the house, & something we figured that we better do is take an inventory of what's in it.

I've read that a video recording is a good way to get a list of what you have, so I think that's a good start. My insurance rep had mentioned that one of her customers was watching a home video at a relative's house that was taken in her own house before a fire. She saw things in the video that she had forgotten about & didn't file in her original claim. I can't remember what I did over the weekend so I know I'm sure as heck not going to remember what's in the 3rd drawer up from the bottom in the roll away in the garage.   ::)

Might be a good topic to keep going if others have ideas or tips of what to do.

But don't keep the video tape in the garage or house.Put a copy in a safety deposit box,or at a relatives place.

Good point, & since the camcorder I have now is digital, I can probably save it online somewhere secure, too.
