I am sure that most of you have heard about what took place at Toronto's Pearson International Airport yesterday by now.  I would say that there were some very fortunate souls aboard that plane on Tuesday.

Highway # 401, the main artery that runs through ON (from Montreal to Windsor) and directly through the city of Toronto, beside the airport was a mess last night with traffic (it took me 1.5hrs to get home instead of 45mins - which is not too bad considering) and even worse this morning with the gawkers.

I had left the office at 4:00 PM and heard on the radio about the plane skidding off of the runway.  It didn't sound that bad.  Then when I was at Eglinton Ave. & Kipling Ave. (about 5 miles away) I could see the smoke.  My commute takes me right beside the airport.  What a sight to see.  Pretty F'in scary.  I had called my associate from MN who is flying in today and told him that he is lucky to be flying into Toronto today (Wednesday) and stated that the chances of two planes crashing at the same airport in two days is pretty slim.  Our customer is coming in from KS this afternoon and she feels the same way.  Hopefully their flights arrive in time.

Anyways, here are a few photos for you. I am sure there are plenty more on the www.  BTW, these are not mine, I swiped them from The Toronto Star.

Also, it seems that 20 years ago to the minute (4:03 PM) a flight crashed in Dallas, TX under the same circumstances.  Freaky!

Now all we have to do is wait for Drache to chime in and tell us his Brother's Grilfriend's Cousin was on that flight!  :icon_smile_big:

Just so long as Drache's hot sister is OK everything's good  ;D

Seriously those people were very lucky.   Most air mishaps are lucky to have only a few casualties...  most end up with 100% casualties.
That was very forunate that everybody got out alive.

Me too. You sure don't hear that kind of news too often.
I'm glad everyone made it.

You know what the statistics say "it's safer to fly". The only problem is the speed you are traveling at and the height. Something goes wrong, gravity takes over. I heard reports that they believe the plane was hit by lightning just before touch down and that might of affected the hydraulics of the plane.

I heard someone say recently (can't remember where but it makes sense)

"I am not afraid of flying, just crashing".

I won't fly. I have to go to Dallas to pick up my new truck Friday. I would rather drive a rental 12 hours than fly for an hour.  I use to fly all the time. I developed a phobia for some reason. It kept getting harder and harder. I flew to the law enforcement memorial event they have in Washington, DC a few years ago. That's the last time I flew. It was white knuckles all the way there and back.  I will never fly again unless it's la matter of life or death.

From what I saw on TV the pilot of that jet that crashed was some kind of hero. His plane was on fire but he took the time to check the entire plane for remaining passengers before he got out.

I'd be more willing to believe that they hit a "microburst" or some other wind-related factor. The pilot had already gone around once due to high winds and they touched down (supposedly safely) on the next pass. There was a lightning warning at the airport but the weather radar would have shown a strike on the airport or in the near vicinity. I'd also say the plane landed at a higher speed than normal because the pilot probably came in fast without full flaps due to the wind. Any tailwind or water on the runway would have exaggerated the problem. That all is just a guess of course. I'm still amazed at how well it turned out under the circumstances.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.
