battery cable

Where does the neg. side of the battery cable mount at. Mine is at least 2 or 3 feet long so Im thinking on the other side ot the engine compartment.
Any ideas?

yes      

 but  not sure if the factory  bolted it between the intake & the throttle return bracket  , seem to remember seeing it this way on a few restored cars  , could just be how those were found or error or just preference

The cable was mounted under the return spring bracket and it was there when the engine was painted so the first six inches to a foot were painted engine color.
