Who shifts their automatic manually?

The other post about auto or manual got me thinking.....

My car is a console automatic with the chrome shifter and push button. When I am driving around town I love to shift it manually and listen to the 383 HP go thru the RPM range thru the "loose" hemi mufflers. I started doing this with my 67 Dart GT in high school.

Does anyone else do this?

Been shifting automatics as long as I've been driving them.  :icon_smile_big:

Definitely do in the Chargers though.  :yesnod:

I shift mine but mainly because my trans shifts way too early on its own.
Plus I have the "FrankenShifter" which makes it a lot of fun  :rotz:

Isnt going from low to 2nd hard on the torqueflight transmission?!?!

I used too. Now that I have the correct carb and kickdown linkage, I let Ma Mopar and my adjustments do it automatically. When I want that awesome acceleration sound I just hold the pedal down.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

Yes.

John, is it hard enough on the transmission that we shouldn't be shifting from 1st to 2nd?

I have a reverse manual valve body in my pro-street charger. So if I want to get out of first gear I have to shift.  :icon_smile_big:

I'm also running a full reverse manual valve body with a Gear Vendor's Overdrive unit tossed into the bunch.. It's a LOT of fun to drive!!!!!!!!!!!

With a full auto transmission the rear band is applied when the shifter is placed in "1", the band must release on the manual 1-2 upshift and it releases slowly causing lots ofd drag/wear. The rear band was never intended to be used on a regular basis, that's why it's not applied in Drive.

With most RMVB's the rear band isn't applied in 1st so the only thing that wears more than normal is the shift linkage.

Is the thinking behind this that the 1 gear will be stronger then just starting out in D?

Yes, with the rear band applied much of the load is taken off of the sprag which is a known weak link.

This is one of those cases where "you can't have your cake..............." If you apply the rear band in low you have to deal with the fact that the servo releases by spring pressure only as opposed to the kickdown servo that releases by both spring and hydraulic pressure. A heavier spring in the rear servo helps the release as does selecting a valve body transfer plate with the largest fluid channel to the rear servo.

How can I say this? An automatic shifting at anything but full throttle just sounds weird to me.

With my rev pattern man shift if I shift at low rpms it bangs into gear but if I bring the rpms up and stay accelerating it works and feels fine.

Thanks for that bit of info.  When I used to slug the tractor on a trailer out of a field with the old 440/727 in my 74 D200 I would use low and get it up on the road and then stop and go to D and then head out and go.
