Just can't be a nice guy.....

I'm a retired electrical contractor.  Over the years I've always tried to help out friends or acquaintances less fortunate than myself.  I had to quit doing it many years ago due to, what seems to be, a inherent flaw in human nature.  Instead of being truly grateful for fixing an electrical problem or doing  a small project for them for little or no compensation, they seemed to want to adopt me as their personal free electrical guru.  Last year, my wife volunteered me to help out a low income couple that just needed some circuits hooked up in their garage.  True to form, they now need a service moved.  When I told them that I wasn't going to get involved with this new need of theirs, they acted offended.  Hell, I'm not even licensed anymore and can't pull a permit for this stuff.  They just can't see past the potential for a cheap or free job from good ol' Bob.  Sorry for the rant.  But,  I'd rather be out driving the Charger than running wires for some ungrateful so and so.   Bob

i know the feeling, had someone wreck their 1 year old vw wabbit but she let the insurance lapse. since im a car guy everyone got me involved. put the car on the lift removed and replaced the bent front axle and did an alignment on the car plus hammered out the front fender. and they paid cash to the one she hit so she wouldnt turn it in on a police report. i gave up a couple hours loading it on the car trailer and 2 days on my lift working on it while on vacation. not even a thank you. from the guys wife :flame:

My brother in-law is notorious for this... and he still wonders why I won't touch anything he owns.

Yeah I used to do everything cash, then I just told people I don't have the time anymore.  Everyone can relate to that.  I like stories like that.  I love to kiss ungrateful people goodbye.  My dad used to tell me never loan money to friends and family.  I always loaned it if it was reasonable and lost several people I thought were friends.  best money I ever spent.  :2thumbs:
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

I know what you are talking about.I'm a plumber everyone has a problem with their plumbing. My wife used to volunteer me all the time. I put a end to all that. The best thing I ever did was tell them to buy me beer and I will come over and watch them do it as I give directions. One friend didn't mind he did not mind doing it just didn't know how. The rest paid someone else to do it.

If you deal straight with people and stay honest it's really their problem if/when they get offended.

I have one of those big, heavy duty 2 wheel dollies, like the ones made to move refrigerators and

other large appliances. :coolgleamA:

A "Friend" of mine was in the habit of borrowing it all the time. ::)

I wouldn't see it, or him - for weeks, so I would call him up and ask for my Dolly back.

Most of the time he would bring it right back, one of the times the answer was

"The Dolly"?

"Why"?

"Do you NEED it?" :brickwall:

My answer, stupidly, was "Naw, just bring it back when you're done with it" :rotz:

Then, I heard the rumor about the little side business my "buddy" had started...

He was moving people with his truck and trailer and MY Dolly...and getting PAID for it. :flame:

I suddenly felt the urge to move my refrigerator...NOW! :slap:

So, I call him up....

"Hey! "I need my Dolly back right now!"

..."I'm on my way over to get it" :drive:

"Uhhh...That's going to be a problem" :brickwall:

"It's going to be a few days before I can get that back to you" :brickwall:

OK.... Where the F___ is it? :slap:

"Uhhh....My nephew's girlfriend's brother has it"

Who? :shruggy: :shruggy: :shruggy:

Yeah, uhhhh....he was moving in to his college dorm, so he took it to school with him"

GET ME MY EFFING DOLLY BACK !!!!!! :fireangry: :fireangry: :nutkick:

About a week later I came home after work and my Dolly was laying in the driveway.... ::)

I haven't seen him since....

Being the "go to guy" is a pisser sometimes. Maybe its a good thing that you are a car guy instead of a proctologist.
