DANG OIL LEAK!!!

Ok I have been battling this oil leak since I got this charger 3 months ago.  It is leaking "somewhere" around the oil filter.  It constantly drips off the oil filter onto the exhaust and onto the driveway.  I have changed the filter probably 4 times.  And just when I think it has stopped...here come the drips again!!  It is NOT an extra gasket stuck on the block.  It is NOT leaking from above anywhere.  It looks like it is leaking from around the area where the oil filter goes (not sure what to call it) the circular area on the block itself.  It thought maybe it was the oil pan but it is not that either.  Any ideas? :brickwall:

The flat matting surface on the oil pump could have a nick in it. Dose it start to leak after the engine & oil come up to normal temps. If so then I would suspect the oil pump casting has a pin hole in it somewhere. Check to see if it is leaking around any of the bolt heads also. Hopes this helps. :Twocents:.

Thanks for the reply.  If it does have nick it it, how would I fix that?

Had a brand new melling pump leak from the cover/oil filter housing part. Took it off and machined it flat, was all good afterwards. Just a few bolts hold the cover/oil filter housing part on...might have the same issue, there's also an o ring that sleals it up in there if I remember correctly. Could also be leaking from where the pump attatches to the block.

Is it a small block?  If the filter leaks on a small block it will drip onto the exhaust.

If it is a small block then the gasket between the adapter and block may be whats leaking.

The part the oil filter threads onto also has a hex on it.  Unscrew it and the adapter will come right off.

Yes Plumcrazy, it is a small block 318.  There is no adapter on it.  The oil filter just screws right onto the side of the block.  Should there be an adapter?

This could be what's wrong. I wonder if a little black silicone around the gasket area would work?  I know it would be a pain to scrap it off every time I change oil but it might work wouldn't it?

Maybe adapter is not the best word to use.
Remove the oil filter and look at the threaded part the oil filter screws onto.  It had a hex at it's base.
Unscrew it and you can remove plate that the oil filter goes up against.
There is a big O shaped gasket under that plate.
