I recently purchased a 1968 Dodge charger with a 383 and 3spd.  I keep getting a rattling noise when I am driving and I pulled the starter and it is the little shim between the starter and the flywheel.  I pulled it off and hammered it flat and put it back on and took it for a ride and after about 30 mins it started again.  Can I modify it or is something else wrong?  Any help would be greatly appreciated there are not a lot of mopar guys where I live and I really want to drive my car

Not sure what the problem. I familar with the starter shim for the manual trans.Have you got another none good starter to try or borrow. It could be brand new defective starter. Most auto parts store will bench test your starter.
If starter passes it might be a electrical or connection problem.
Your shim should look like this  http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/upload2/4936141-1221001.jpg

are you sure it's the shim and not the starter drive moving rearwards and hitting the ring gear?

Beaujact

the shim has scratches on it where the bolts for the fly wheel are hitting it? Does the shim even serve a real purpose? is it there just to keep the starter from going too far in?

is this a 3 spd manual or automatic trans?

Ok I see you got the automatic with starter shield that goes between motor and trans. That little cover that gives you access to converter bolts .Is it scraping I had to leave it off in some cases. Also are the converter bolts the right ones. The heads of converter bolts maybe be hitting shield

Thanks for the help I think I am going to leave it off and try that for a while it has had some modifications and my thinking is that it was not taken into account.  Thanks again I really appreciate the help. :2thumbs:

Did you mean 4-speed? I don't believe that a 383 was available with the 3-speed. But if so, please post pics (PPP).  :2thumbs:

Could he have the cover on backwards, also could the converter not be seated fully on the pump.  :Twocents:.
