One of how many?

When people say their car is one of xxx cars to show rarity, how is that actually figured out?  Is it just based on the power train?  Or do you also include the color as an additional breakdown?  For example, my car is an XS29U0G, of which 7,131 were produced.  There were only 647 FY1 cars, but how many of them were XS29U0G autos?  Probably less than 647.  My car is also a no vinyl top and stripe delete car with hood pins option which is likely a rare combination as I can't imagine how many people would have wanted a car that size with that much yellow not broken up with some stripes or a vinyl roof.

My point is, if you take enough options into consideration, most people could probably say their car is 1 of 3 or some other small number.  So I'm wondering, is there a known rule-of-thumb out there that is followed when people figure out and advertise that their car is 1 of xxx cars?

There aren't any rules of thumb or guidelines that I know of. I am pretty sure there are not too many production numbers that are known at all. Look at it this way, Galen is the "king" of this stuff and his documentation always caries the "x of y known to exist" disclaimer. Personally, I think the numbers are interesting but more from a it's cool to see rare options then I have to have that because it's rare.

This is pretty much how most people do it although before engine you've got R/T, Convertible, Superbee, etc

The more steps you go though it's not too hard to make your car sound SUPER rare.

Example (not based on facts): One of -

1967 Dodge Dart - 25,000 built

GT - 5,000

340 - 2,000

4 Speed - 1,500

Blue - 700

Blue Interior - 200

Radio Delete - 50

The list is endless.
Dart
Racing
Ass
Chasing
Hellion
Extraordinaire

Khyron

....all that and pay some jackoff stupid money to "verify" it.

Ghoste is correct from what I understand. Body types, engines, and transmissions were always documented.  Shipping records are used to supplement rare color combo's and optional equipment breakdowns - like Kevin Marti does for Ford products.

I'm not sure what you mean by this but Chrysler did track what options came with what model and body style for several reasons. 1) sales and marketing and 2) inventory control. GG's Options and Accessories reports are nothing more than taking the factory data and making it more reader friendly. This is why you can know (approximately) how many cars came with certain options.

What you can't do is combine multiple options to determine how many were made. The numbers just don't work like that.

If you crunch the numbers and work permutations of how many different body styles, colors, recommended interiors and stripe combinations there are then add in other options like radios and A/C, you usually come up with a number that is higher than actual production meaning it's not a wonder each car is one of one. It's a wonder to find two cars alike.

Here's a factory computer printout for the 68 Barracuda broken down by body style and engine across the top then options along the side. The columns in the middle contain percentages. This is how we know that 35% of 68 Barracuda /6 hard tops came with undercoating.

You can only go by known production figures for each option. You cannot cross reference options and come up with a different number. You can ony go by the numbers known for each option and use the lowest number as that is the only verified number.

While not logical, all 647 FY1 cars could have been automatics or only one of them could have been. The actual number produced is somewhere between 1 and 647. There is no way to know that actual number.

See, that's what makes sense to me.  I just didn't understand how people in magazines or on TV shows come to the 1 of 6 type numbers.  Now I see it's basically all bullshit.

cars and kids if together yes they talk and plot against ya,,hahaha   if there is a odd number then few get along and pick on odd car out,,,, it gets hurt feelings and does not run right or breaks down so it can get  love and attension from you or repair shop guy????? do you really know how he touches your car and where ,when your leave it for servicing,,hahaha.      THAT IS WHY THEY ONLY MADE 1 OR 2 CAR GARAGES FOR ALL THOSE YEARS.   THEN CAR MANUFACTURERSS  FIGURED THIS OUT AND PAYED HOME BUILDER TO MAKE 3 CAR GARAGES TO DRIVE UP DEALER REPAIRS......MY CAR TOLD ME ONE EVENING  WHEN I SPILLED A FIFTH OF VODKA IN CAR IN GARAGE WHILE  HIDING OUT FROM PHYCO XXX WIFE..HAHAHAHA    HONEST FROM DJ ,DISHONEST JOHN

69 OUR/TEA

I'll take it one step further, forget about how little the production number they made of  certain cars,R/T Chargers,Birds,Daytonas,Hemi Cudas and on.....bottom line,if you have one you're not the only one with one.
I have this conversation with a very good friend quite often, forget the monetary value as it means nothing to me,or him as he has something that noone else can say they have, and he has the right to say "1 of 1" literally.
Galen certified and all !!!! Willed down from his family,he has the FIRST 69 Roadrunner post car made, and possibly the "FIRST" Roadrunner made for 1969,never makes public comment about it,has had it for 20 years already, been in his family since 1978.Needs to be restored, and has been collecting just about every NOS part for it that has come up in years past. It's a 383 4spd,bench seat A/C car, orig fender tag"PILOT" vin 00000x.
If it were mine,I would/could care less how valuable or not it is,and would not trade something like that for any of your highly sought after more desirable models, hands down.As now you have something that is truly stand alone, bar none!!!

Agree. There is NO way to know how many were produced.

Again, given the number of combinations possible, it's not amazing a car is 1 of 1. It's more amazing to find two alike.
