Hudson Hornet !

I have been searching these threads for an answer, but I am still confused on a couple subjects. I am ready to fire the car as soon as these connections are made, so as you can tell I am anxious.

Here are my questions:

1.  I have an msd 6al. I would like to get rid of the ballast, and I understand how to do that. My question is, After the ballast is removed and the wires are tied together, can I then use the coil + wire to rout to the small red msd wire? ( makes sense to me, if all the wires are connected together).

2.  I am upgrading to a solid state voltage regulator.  How do I wire in the pigtail with the above combination of wires?  ( The wiring diagram that came with the regulator was less than helpful)

Thanks for any help you can give as I am confused and bewildered!

It's not clear what you're saying. Do you mean that the coil+ wire in the harness is no longer used to supply the coil? if so, then after removing the ballast it merely becomes a 12v source. I have no idea how much current you need to supply the MSD, if you're only using it as a key-on signal then you are fine.

You saying you have a 68 Charger and its wiring .And you wanting to go upgrade to the 70 alternator and regulator.?Your 68 should have a black box or maybe a mopar performance blue regulator. That uses a double blue wire and single green. To go 70 if thats the case you add a additional fieldwire. And get the flat voltage 70 -up regulator. And its connector to voltage regulator and its firewall mountng bracket .And a 70 dual field alternator. You can also use the 70 engine harness that comes with 70- voltage regulator/alternator wiring

Hudson Hornet !

okay, now I am really confused!! LOL!  Actually, the msd wiring I think I understand now. Yes, I would like to use the coil + wire to "wake up" the MSD. I understand that the heavy red wire actually powers it.

As for the regulator, I have my original single field alt and bought a newer style external regulator for it. ( I was worried about my original mechanical unit).  So I need instructions on how to wire the newer ( 2 pin ) regulator to the wiring harness that I have.  Sorry for the confusion!

This the type regulator you have 1969 and back .Green wire goes under the nut .Blue wire plugs into the red

When you say 2 pin regulator I think your refering to the 70-up type flat voltage regulator that doesnt work with a 1968 and back single field alternator. But you can upgrade to the 70-up system

Thanks to all those who replied.  After researching the links mentioned above, I have discovered what I was doing wrong. I had the wrong alt!  I was trying to wire a dual field system with a single field alt. That has been corrected and I am on my way.  Once again, Thanks to all who helped!
