Is there any truth to the thing about Cale Yarborough editions being sold on one side of the Mississippi and Dan Gurney editions on the other?

or  *on one side of the Mason/Dixon line*  perhaps??

I haven't personally heard of such, although I'm anything but an expert.

The east / west thing relating to Cyclone Spoilers is an urban legend.

wingcar

Found this on one of the Cyclone Spoiler sites......(doesn't prove or disprove anything, but interesting none the less if true)

"It is widely believed that Mercury planned to sell the Cale Yarborough Spoiler IIs and Spoilers east of the Mississippi River and in the South while the Dan Gurney Spoilers were west of the Mississippi River and in the North through its dealer network. There is evidence to suggest this may have been the plan but it appears that there were exceptions. But we do know that the Spoiler II and the Spoiler by Mercury are very special cars."

Many years ago at a wingcar show I was told by "an expert" on these cars that the reason for the use of two names was because Mercury figured that more people out West would know Dan Gurney since he was located in California....and those in the South would know the NASCAR driver Cale Yarborough.  But, that was second hand information from an "unoffical" source.......
Either way...makes for a good story....
