Time Passed By...

This is me when I was 17 and in the Marine Corps.  It was something I had wanted to do for as far back as I could remember.  When I told Dad that I had joined up, I remember him saying; "Well son, it will either make you or break you."  But the closest I ever came to breaking was when I lost Dad about five years ago.

This is now...

(I apologize for the large photos.  There are still things that I am trying to learn on computers.)

This photo is about two years old now, but is one of my favorites.  My wife took it in our shop and it includes my two sons, Levi and Ethan, and our Pit Bull/Lab mix appropriately named "Hubcap".  The car is a 1966 Ford Thunderbird Town Landau.  My dad thought that the '66 T-Bird Town Landau was the best car ever built and owned three of them during his lifetime.  He never was much into Mopars until he saw my '71 Charger R/T and what I had done to it.  Much too soon that same red Charger was the lead car in his funeral procession, and I realized that my own life would never be the same.

After dad passed away, something got me to looking around for a '66 T-Bird Town Landau.  I found this one and started reworking it to suit me.  The engine was a cheap rebuild, so the boys and I pulled it and hand assembled one to put in its' place.  This was taken just as we were getting everything buttoned up.  That is why we are all smiling, except for Hubcap.  He realizes that we haven't heard the thing run yet.

Levi and Ethan also both plan to join the Marine Corps, but they are taking a smarter route than the old man.  Levi has been accepted to the Summer Seminar at the Naval Academy at Annapolis.  There were some 9,000 applicants, and he was one of 1,800 selected.  A group of former Annapolis graduates presented him a scholarship to pay his expenses.  It is not an appointment yet, but it is starting to look promising.  Ethan plans to follow in his older brother's footsteps.  The old man plans to retire from the Highway Patrol in a couple of years, and watch his sons achieve heights he never thought possible when he was their age.  Only time will tell in all of this, and I wonder what a picture will tell of us twenty years from now.  And I also can't help but wonder if dad pondered the same thought when that first picture was taken nearly fifty years ago...

May God bless America,

man that's cool i dig the painted on headers and chain drive logo!  :icon_smile_big:

Stratocharger,

I have never forgotten that car.  It was bright yellow with black painted letters and trim, and the wheels were red.  I was the oldest of four, and every time a new baby came along we would drag out the old Hot Rod and give it the once over.  I don't know whatever happened to it, probably got left behind in one of our frequent moves.  They say they don't build cars like they used to; well, they don't build toys like they used to either.  Hot Rod was solid steel and made in the good ol' USA.

May God bless America,

But tell Jon I get to kiss the bride!

yellowcuda

Will do.  We figured after 7 years of living together and everyone thinking we were married we might as well get the tax break on his income tax! :icon_smile_big:

Real simple, family only, here at the house, my best friend is performing the ceremony.  We will then cook out and play in the moonbouncer I rent, and play horseshoes too.  Everyone has been told to wear comfy clothes...shorts etc.  Should be a blast.
